For traditional car insurance policies, insurance providers ask for a valid driver’s license. However, there are exceptions for SR22s. Drivers are still able to file an SR22 without a valid driver’s license. SR22 providers are aware that in some cases, proof of insurance may be required in order to have a valid license.

If you need proof of insurance before your license is reinstated, your SR22 provider will start your high-risk car insurance policy and give you a couple of weeks to get your license reinstated.

If you do not reinstate your license within the allowed time frame given by your SR22 provider, your car insurance policy will be canceled. If this happens, you will need to start the SR22 filing process from the beginning.

If you have never had a driver’s license issued to you, the state of Illinois will assign your case a number that you may use to file an SR22.
