The "little hat" actually comes from there being an s in ancient French, this is why "forêt" has one too because it used to be "forest"

The "accent circonflexe" is here because before it was written "hospital" in old french. They removed the "s" and changed it to a "^" on the previous letter :) Same thing with the word "fenêtre" which was "fenestre" before

Fun fact: the hat means there used to be an "S" after the vowel. But it was removed because people didn't pronounce it.

I’m an American, and when he did the loopy-loopy circle for confused Americans, I nearly woke the whole house up with my laughter. This was the best!!

For those wondering, the "little hat" literally means that there used to be an S right after the O, but we don’t prononce it anymore

"Ze little hat" also known as accent circonflexe comes from there once being an "S" in the Word in old French. Hôtel, forêt, hôpital, fenêtre, côte, mâitre, château, etc. If you want to know where to put it you can try to look at the English word, if it came itself from French. L'août = august, île = isle

French is like life. When something’s too good to be true, it is

I remember my french teacher at school, long ago, telling us that when the word used to have an S, the “hat” accent is used as a prayer sign for its departed soul XD

Made it easier sometimes to know when to use the accent

Actually the « ^ » is the mark that in the old french they were an « s » like in English. It’s the same thing for window, « fenêtre » in french, in the old french it was « fenestre » the « s » still exist in other words of the same family of words like « défenestrer » that literally mean « throw out of the window »
