Burma Bagan : The City of 3000 Temples

Burma is not only fascinating because of its very rich history, but also its atmosphere, aromas and hospitality.

Occupied by the Mons, the Burmans and the British, Burma has known multiple cultures. T

he city of Bagan, “the land of golden roofs,” is a jewel of Burma. It is a testament to the past grandeur of the kings of Bagan who reigned over the first Burman empire.

There are monuments of Sri Lankan, Indian, Tibetan, Mon and Burman influence...

This majestic Buddhist archaeological site, comparable to Angkor in neighboring Cambodia, is home to more that 2,000 temples, stupas and pagodas, built between the 11th and 13th centuries and spread across 40 km2.

It is the largest concentration of Buddhist monuments in the world.

After having gone through the Sarabha Gate, a estige of the 9th century, you can admire a view of the entire old city from the top of the ThatbyinnyuPahto Temple: at 63 meters high it is the tallest monument in Bagan.

The construction of the Shwezigon Pagoda was begun in 1059 by King Anawrahta to shelter a jawbone and tooth of Buddha that he had obtained after his campaign against the Dali kingdom (in what is now Yunnan).

It was finished under the reign of his son Kyansittha in 1102: inside the complex there is a stone pillar that has inscriptions about the King.

The Ananda Temple is one of the most beautiful Buddhist monuments in Bagan. Built by King Kyansittha in 1091, it was originally dedicated to the “infinite wisdom” of the Buddha (anantapinya). According to Legend, Kyansittha had been inspired by the description that monks from India gave of their temple, which would explain the Ananda's Indian architectural features.

The Wetkyi Inn Gubyaukgyi Temple houses lovely frescos depicting scenes from the Jataka. The stairs inside lead to four Buddha images and the Hindu sculptures carved on the spire.

The Htilominlo Temple, famous for its fine stucco ornaments, was built between 1211 and 1218 by King Htilominlo (or Nandaungmya) to commemorate the fact that a parasol (a symbol of power) tilted towards him him during his enthronement. On the second floor, four buddhas have their backs to the central pillar, facing in the four directions.

Bangan the historical land of Myanmar. The hearts of the people and the heart of Buddhism. The glory of our country and the glory of the people. We have stand united in ancient time and we have defeated and drove the invaders from our land . United we stand, device we fall .If we united in one flag we will bring our ancestors proud and we shall show the world what we are . Glory to the mother land and glory to the people of Myanmar.

Been to Bagan. Nothing much else except for the ancient stupas and monasteries. Across a river nearby, the weather is depressingly hot and arid. Trees are dead and no animals wander around; not even a chicken. Local people said it was due to an ancient curse.

Hey Presenter, "King Kyan Sitt Thar" was not the 3rd king of Burma. @ 36:09 . He was just the 44th king of Bagan Dynasty. Bagan Dynasty had totally 55 kings in all 4 Bagan Eras. Bagan eras followed the eras of Pyu city states; before Pyu city state era, TaGaung era was most early started, like the saying goes "TaGaung is the begining of Myanmar (Burmese)"
You can see the eras of Myanmar like this:
TaGaung >> Pyu >> Bagan >> Pinn Ya >> Ava (Inn Wa) >> Taung Ngu (Hantharwady) >> Nyaung Yan (2nd Ava) >> Kon Boung >> British Colony

I went to Bagan in 2017 AD. It is an amazing place, and I did the balloon ride early in the morning with my GF. I will say this. You've seen one temple and you've seen them all. My GF, who is a both a woman and a Buddhist, was not allowed in many of the inner sanctums of the temple. I said to her, "well these are YOUR people." I was never more happy than flying to Saigon. It is too late now with the political turmoil, but even so, I would NOT recommend it. There are friendly people everywhere. You know once you start seeing a lot of white people, it is too late.

The presenter has done commendable job in exposing ancient Buddhist temples/monuments/ in Burma. As seen, the Burmese Government has not taken any action to restore its glory. The present military regime is not at all interested to keep the monuments, temples and important historical places in a good condition. Someone should come forward to do the needful to bring it back to the original glory. Thank you to the presenter.
