To dispel some misconceptions I'm seeing in the comments:

Real longswords of the period would have weighed somewhere between 2.5 and 3.5 lb, and the training swords that we are using, although they look different, are that weight. They're designed slightly differently to give them thick blunt edges, But they feel and operate like a real sword.

Fencing does not mean what you see at the Olympics. It's simply means sword fighting. Every form of sword fighting is fencing.

The idea that the longsword is slow and bulky is one born out of Hollywood. It seems exactly like this that lead people to believe that these weapons were crude and heavy. In reality, they are exactly what we showed them to be 😁

They're not fencing. Fencing is a series of fences, typically used for securing an area! 🤦‍♂️😁

Wii Sports Resort is the most accurate depiction of fencing in fiction - this is the non-negotiable truth.

Id love to see you guys choreograph for a movie or TV show. I think itd be nice to see a more realistic style of fighting.

Fiction (video games):
Swords require strength to hit.
Bows require dexterity to hit.

Real life:
Fencers use their dexterity to breach the opponent's guard.
Archers use their strength to draw weight behind a bow.

These videos will gradually improve choreography overall as the viewers expectations and understanding improves. These are great videos.

If I was cast as say Jaime Lannister, I would take that excuse to live in a HEMA facility until filming started. I never understood why actors cast for stuff like this don’t take the opportunity to get good at the things we all dreamed of as kids.

To be fair, strength definitely helps. Definitely not the goal of swordsmanship, but ive noticed a substantial growth in my skill level ever since i started doing more calisthenics😅

There’s a problem though. Frivolous flourishes are cool. The ultimate question is how to make them still a wee bit realistic

Movie sword combat is fun. But when they lock blades and aggressively push at each other with in intense look😂😂😂 that, I can’t help but burst out in laughter.

I’m currently writing a fantasy novel and it’s because of you that I’m trying to keep the descriptions of sword combat very realistic to what it should be

Thing is, is that swords in Hollywood are meant to be flashy. Because if they thought like a real sword, fight, be it if they have a katana or a long sword, it would be done fairly quickly. The port of the sword fight no matter what kind of sword or what you use is“get this person away from me, and make sure that they do not stab me. From what I’ve heard, there are four outcomes of a sword fight for a person . Death of both combatants, which is the most obvious, your opponent is dead, and you are wounded, both of you leave the fight wounded, or you leave the fight unwounded with your opponent is dead, which is the rarest I assure you. The point is is that swordfights are not meant to be flashy. They’re basically there to ensure that you don’t get killed because someone is out to kill you. Now there are ceremonial duels that don’t involve people getting killed and are nearly done for sport because that was a thing that’s where Olympic fencing comes from but if you’re talking about on the street brawling out stored bites? Nope. It’s pretty much Either kill or wound your opponent, and hopefully not get killed or wounded yourself.

The chorography in that series is abysmal.

Why can't Hollywood realize that realistic choreography looks way better?

Even without spinning and unnecessary flourishes, real sword fights just look so much prettier than Hollywood ones. Why do they make them look like this.

I love the princess bride for many reasons, but the choreography is one of the biggest.

You're actually using 500 gram blades, while they're using 100 kg longswords!!! THE VERY NOTION that someone who does HEMA knows mode about HEMA than me is utterly ridiculous!!!

You should see the movie "The Last Knights" directed by Kaz. Kiriya.

Most choreographers don't practice the art, or refer to experts which is why you see what you spoke of.

"The Last Knights" doesn't do this. Now, we won't see anything exotic, but it's good movement nonetheless.
