Kings had a under rated team in 2001 and 2002 . Led by Felix Potvin and Ziggy Palffy, Deadmarsh, Robitaille (traded), and Jason Allison. They upset the Redwings and pushed power house Avalanche into 2 game 7s .

The day of the Gretzky trade, they unveiled the new black and silver colors and jerseys

The team was first dressed in Forum Blue (Purple) and Gold (Yellow) to match the Lakers, but with the popularity of the Los Angeles Raiders among the African-American and Latino communities and the rise of hip-hop and rap groups like N.W.A. in the late 1980s, Forum Blue and Gold was replaced with the Silver and Black they use today.
