His voice didn’t sound unique when singing rock. However... you turn on his country music and immediately you know that voice. He found his niche with country music.

as a close friend of the Wallen family I remember everyone being like "oh one of the Wallens is gonna be on the voice tonight wonder how that'll go" and now he's the biggest in the entire country game... been crazy to see but the whole family is honestly full of talent, majority of them all play and sing in church and have great voices

If you compare this to how he sounds today, his voice has really grown and come into its own and country songs really suit his lovely raspy voice. So glad I found his music ♥
