How can this band be so tight yet so relaxed? They are in no hurry to be excellent.

Sonny Payne - skilful, entertaining, the rhythmic heart and without doubt the catalyst and what gave this band it's spark. But, and vastly more importantly, knows how and when to sit back and let the band speak. A real legend of the genre who deserves so much more recognition than he gets.

These men were amazing. The Count helped make jazz the music of America and this band is one reason why. Thanks.

The way Snooky, Joe Newman and Thad Jones articulate those trumpets together and as soloists, the way Freddie Greene swings, the way the great Marshall Royal phrases and controls that Band, I would not believe it if I hadn’t heard it, consistently, so many times.

No band could swing like this one. They were the greatest.

This is like a show-off of different brass mutes haha. Basie's Orchestra was dope! Tight, swingigng and relaxing at the same time. Everything seems extremely natural, simple, but yet extremely rich!

My father introduced me to big bands. I am glad that some high schools actually still feature them. This kind of music must never die.

Basie & Ellington are the coolest big bands I've heard.

There are so many full Basie concerts on YouTube. I love it. I watch them all over and over. I just wish there was a dedicated Freddie cam throughout each of these concerts. I want to watch Freddie Green!

We are going through turgid times right now but this has me smiling from ear to ear throughout. What the hell are they doing to our world when we can have this?

No doubt the greatest thing ever recorded.

4:19-4:27 Love these little moments captured in these videos, like when Snooky Young tries to place his mute on Eric Dixons stand and he refuses it. Later, going back to his place he nudges Mr. Dixons cheek passing by 5:18-5:22. This was a road band and we can be part of their experience in a tiny bit 59 years later.
