Scythe is one of my favorite games. I enjoy Expeditions and like that it has some foundational similarities while also feeling fairly different, but it's not a top tier game for me. I do like the solo mode better, though, than Scythe because it is very streamlined in Expeditions. Also, since the games are different enough, my friend who didn't like Scythe on their first play (and won't play it again) will play and enjoy Expeditions.

Even with the Gears of Corruption (which is great btw) there's still a lot of room in the box. I like choosing my colour each play and never thought of storing the minis with the rings on lol (I store my rings with the coloured player tokens). No idea why they didn't give the token container a lid, that seems like such a miss

The game box is designed to contain the expansion Gears of Corruption. You can tell Stonemaier probably removed the extra 2 mechs and dual layered player boards to reduce the cost of the base game to meet a certain price point. And of course, sell you an expansion for more money. Once you have the expansion things are decently snug, but the insert still leaves a lot to be desired.

Totally agree re: the hex tiles, they're way to big, and the icons actually get a little lost in the midst of the art sometimes, I would rather the icons stood out.

I didn't play Scythe. I got caught up in the hype of Expeditions when it went up for Pre-order. I appreciated it was NOT a crowdfund. But things got weird during the pre-order period and I found myself flipflopping back and forth with my preorder but ultimately cancelled it because I was unhappy with some of the gameplay design decisions. It sounded like it severely lacked playtesting.

I liked the original Expeditions game, and the Gears of Corruption expansion, addressed my minor quibbles. Now I really like the game both multiplayer and solitaire. I highly recommend you pick up the expansion, and then do a follow-up review.

Huh, I haven't found it as random as you seem to have and I'm usually pretty annoyed by more randomness. It's randomness is largely in the set up of the board (minor) and cards (usually minor) but it's very strategic in how you "solve" the scenario as it unfolds. I prefer it quite a bit to scythe... but then again I was never a big fan of scythe despite going through the full campaign expansion.

I really wanted to like this game but after watching several reviews, it's now on my "pick it up if i see it for around 20" list. I L O V E the scythe world... but this game isn't an epic sequel, like Scythe feels epic. That box feels like hubris from the company too... but to be fair, how many people pay $$$ for larger boxes to fit all their content? They probably thought they were being nice and giving the big box up front. Perhaps...
