#West #Virginia's Point Pleasant. The tiny Appalachian town has a tragic history involving monsters. It is the home of #Mothman, one of America's most infamous legends. This guy with #wings, described as a humanoid figure with enormous wings and flashing red eyes, was originally seen in this area in the 1960s and has since been a regular sight at Point Pleasant. The monster is the ideal illustration of timeless contemporary #American legend. Even in the heart of downtown, there is a statue of the Mothman.

But how can the Mothman phenomenon be explained? Was it a sophisticated deception, or did people just mistake a real object for a fantastical creature? Or perhaps it was something so strange that it defies explanation.

According to one theory, the Mothman sightings may have resulted from hoaxes or incorrect identifications. Some contend that individuals might have mistaken actual objects or animals for the fanciful Mothman. An example is the theory put out by a professor at West Virginia University that the Mothman might have been a sandhill crane. With its enormous wingspan and red eye markings, sandhill cranes resemble one another in appearance.
