A New Alzheimer’s Drug is Dangerous but Effective #dilemma. The process of approving a drug for use involves a complex balancing act between the potential benefits and risks associated with its use. While a drug may demonstrate efficacy and effectiveness in treating a particular condition in the majority of patients, there is always a risk that it may cause harm or adverse effects in a subset of individuals. Making the decision to approve a drug when it works well for most people but can be dangerous to a few presents significant ethical, medical, and regulatory challenges. On one hand, approving a drug that offers significant benefits to the majority of patients can improve treatment options and quality of life for many individuals. It may provide relief from debilitating symptoms, improve patient outcomes, and even save lives. From a public health perspective, access to effective treatments can reduce disease burden, healthcare costs, and societal impact, benefiting individuals, families, and communities. However, on the other hand, approving a drug that carries risks of harm or adverse effects poses potential dangers to patient safety. Even if the risks are relatively rare or occur only in a small percentage of patients, they must be carefully considered and weighed against the potential benefits of the drug. Adverse effects can range from mild and manageable to severe and life-threatening, and may include allergic reactions, organ toxicity, drug interactions, and long-term complications. #alzheimer #memory

Honestly, I think given the effects of Alzheimer's I'd risk the brain swelling. I'd rather die fast than slow if it came down to it. Alzheimer's is such an insidious disease.

The comparison from the normal and alzeihmer brain scares me

Having worked in dementia care for over a decade, that is ground breaking! I hope it does get approved.

While that is a very severe possible side effect, dementia takes people from their families twice. First slowly robbing them of their memories, their independence, their identity and personalities. The physical end is often a relief. A lot of people would be happy to take that gamble if it means maybe they can at least hold off the most severe stages of the disease and retain some of their long term memories, identity, and personality up until that final end.

I also wonder if they have looked at breaking that data down by disease stage. Is the incidence of severe complications higher in people with already advanced disease? It would make sense given that they would have more plaques than those in earlier stages, and a lot of sudden immune activity in the brain is likely to cause issues. If this is the case, then maybe a lot of that risk could be mitigated by only prescribing to those in the early stages, and/or titrating the dosage up slowly or in combination with immune modulators and anti inflammatory meds to help reduce risk of severe complications.

After watching my Grandfather's mind die and his body continuing to suffer for nearly a decade I would have done ANYTHING for him to get these meds because either he would hsve kept his mind OR he would have been allowed peace and dignity in a quick death.

Even alzheimers was found in a 19 year old teen in china and 30 year old man. I do wonder if we will see more young individuals getting diagnosed or having early symptoms of alzheimers. Its terrifying 😢

Couldn't they just do a shunt if they start to show signs of encephalitis?

Hasn't the plaque theory been discredited/disproven?

if i had alzheimers, i would risk my life for this treatment because the alternative (no treatment) is worse in my opinion

Man, those are pretty rough odds when it comes to fatal encephalitis

A risk of death or slowly fading away (faster) while still alive. What would you choose?

Imagine your parent being the patient who got the placebo 💀💀💀

I would definitely risk taking it to avoid alzheimers

I’d rather be dead than have Alzheimer’s, there’s no quality of life if you don’t know who you or your loved ones are…

Wasn't there a theory that the amyloid plaques were possibly a symptom, not necessarily the cause, of Alzheimer's?

Maybe in combination with steroids it can reduce the risk of brain swelling.

25% of people suffering severe side-effects is too much, especially if the side-effect outright ends them.
