In the 1930s, the United States imported four-fifths of the world’s silk and 90% of it came from Japan. And 75-80% of that was used for women’s hosiery — specifically, silk stockings. But all of that would change after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Quite a few pipes back than had nylon stems since it can be heat resistant. Now abs plastic and acrylic are the main materials.

Women wore rayon, wool or cotton stockings during the war years if they didn't want to go with out. Service men and women could get them a lot easier than civilans could.

Showed the US Steel Globe of the 1963 -64 New York Worlds Fair, It's still there, and across the road is the cemetery my father is buried at, he took me and my brother to the fair for a week both years. I was 8 at the time Dupond "Better Living thru Chemistry" At the Dupont Exhibit I watched a fellow not only make chemical light, but also the very thing mentioned in the video. Funny thing about wars, it not only brings out the worst but also the best in us. Nylon came about because of a real need. And yeah people gotten wealthy from it too, not a bad thing. Need is always the catalyst to come up with something better, the Bronze Age gave way to Iron, Iron to steel, Sail to steam, coal to oil, whale oil to Kerosene, I can go on and on with this.

Funny thing is back during WW2 woman in uniform were required to wear hose if wearing a skirt so the only woman in the UK to have silk stocking (or nylon) where woman in uniform.
