The dishwasher oftentimes isn't hot enough. Wash on hot (60°C or more) or boil it in a pan with a sprinkle of detergent for 5 minutes. The latter is much better.

I’ve put mine in the dryer. Is there any downside to that? I have noticed they shrink a bit once I put them in the washing machine.
