LARPing stands for live action role playing. We spent the weekend at a steampunk-themed LARP in New Jersey to see what it's all about.

What ive learned from watching LARP YTbers is that LARP doesnt translate well to video. It seems cringe or silly to us because its out of context and we're not invested. But LARP is all about the in-game experience, developing a character, and what you gain from that. I used to be so against it personally until I looked more into it. Sadly there are no LARPS near me :T

"Live action role playing"... I'm pretty sure I do that everyday without the need of a costume

Stop judging these people. They are having fun and not hurting anyone or anything! I think it’s great even though I’m not interested in it at all.

For people looking at LARP for the first time, this is an example of a low-end immersion game. There is little in the way of decent costuming, and boffers are the cheap way to do LARP. For people looking for other examples of LARP, I would suggest searching for Conquest of Mythodea, Drakenfest and Bicoline. They are examples of large LARPs which demand characters be in costumes and no boffer weapons.
This group seems to be a group of friends who get together and have fun. They seem not to worry about immersion as much as most groups. So this would be a low-end fantasy LARP compared to most other groups.

Essentially, it's like theatre actors acting scenes.

This reminded me of the scene from Gravity Falls episode “Dungeons, Dungeons and More Dungeons” or as Dipper says it “D, D, and More D” where Seuss explains what “FCLORP” is which means “Foam and Cardboard Legitimate Outdoor Role Playing”.

The idea is really cool but there's something about how they show it here that makes it INCREDIBLY cringy

I do larping but it’s cringe to see. I mentally separate myself from how cringe it is when i’m doing it.

This may look really dorky but I kind of admire the fact that these people are able to channel their inner child and be uninhibited by the fetters of societal expectations for a few hours. I couldn’t do it, but it’s probably pretty cathartic.

What’s with all the hate? Are these people directly doing this on your lawn? They’re doing what they love, its a hobby, and it isn’t unhealthy.

This honestly looks really fun to do, it’s unfortunate it looks and is seen as cringy.

This is like improvised theatre.
Don't get why people hate it so damn much.
Maybe they look so cringy becuse they're being filmed.

Honestly, this looks fun as hell. Too bad that my best friend, that I could do this with, lives in a different city...
if I’ll suggest this to my other pals, they’ll probably won’t talk to me anymore XD

We're encouraged to pretend and use our imagination at a young age, but once we hit a certain age we're expected to give it up.

We forget how fun it is to pretend.

I've been hooked on the idea of larping ever since watching Mo Mo O'Brian's videos

LARPing is a lot of fun! I've done this with friends back in the day. I wish we could have filmed some of our LARP shenanigans. Alas, they will have to be immortalized in our memories.
