About this video:

In this video I'll show you 4 ways to trick your opponents when they play the Ruy Lopez defense, also known as the Spanish Game. Two of the traps arise after the Berlin defense, one comes after Alapin's defense, and one comes after the Bird's defense. But ALL of them are super clever and will leave your opponent scratching their heads in confusion. The Fishing Pole Trap and the Mortimer trap are just two of these 4 clever traps.

Beware - at 1:49 if white sneakily plays Nc4 and you take the bishop, Nd6# is a nasty smothered mate.

The Mortimer Trap at 1:50 has another trick after c6 worth mentioning, that being Nc4 and if cxb5?? Nd6#. To refute it, Black just needs to stay alert and stop the mate with Ng6 or d6, which still wins a piece.

After successfully trying the Blackburn Shilling Gambit, I want to try these traps against one of the most common openings.
Tried with the Berlin’s defense, so to have either 1st or 2nd trap options.
The second one worked well, nice and easy 💪

Great video! BTW mistakes happen but rook to e1 forces a queen exchange in the 4th trap and white is only down a rook at the end of the game... So the threat isn't "save queen" or "checkmate" as you said. Anyways the 4 traps seem very useful. Thank you for letting us learn with these useful videos :)

Edit: i analysed the 4th trap on stockfish guys its a losing position for black, do not try it in a game as i said in earlier comment rook e1 is a completely valid move and apparently it loses you the queen.. it does not force a queen trade. If you played that you'll lose your Queen.

I know there's another trap in the Exchange Variation that's quite similar to the Fishing Pole, except that Black offers a bishop instead of a knight on g4.

The last trap, what if white play Re1? Qxe1 I guess?

The third trap, never see that before, thanks!

3:38 - after Knight to D4, they always take my Knight with their Knight. I'll have to set the board up and figure out what to do exactly after that.

No1 is worthless. Abolutely no one captures the knight and it simply remains there in a weird position and you don't really know how to continue. As you say the castling is the most common move for white so would be nice to find more alternatives after the castling in the berlin defence.

How to counter the counters? Can you make a video on that?

2:45 queen b4 pinning the queen will force a queen trade and then you lose a rook
