This video explains what is precision medicine.

Transcript:

A patient goes to the ER complaining of chest pain. She is having a heart attack.

She receives treatment. She is also put on blood-thinning meds to prevent more heart attacks.

But in the next 11 months, she has five more heart attacks.

After sequencing her genome, the docs fine that she has a genetic variant that makes her meds ineffective.

She is put on different meds that work better with her genome and hasn't had a heart attack since.

Precision medicine uses a person's specific information, such as their genome, environment or lifestyle, to give a precise treatment that's personal to them.

Here at NHGRI, we support genomics research that will make precision medicine a reality for all!

* This example shows a case of a patient for whom precision medicine was needed and worked. For most people, conventional therapies are beneficial.
