THE RETURN reunites two of the greatest actors of their generation, in a gritty retelling of Odysseus' return home from war.

After 20 years away, Odysseus (Fiennes) washes up on the shores of Ithaca, haggard and unrecognisable. The King has finally returned home but much has changed in his kingdom since he left to fight in the Trojan war.

His beloved wife Penelope (Binoche) is now a prisoner in her own home, hounded by her many ambitious suitors to choose a new husband, a new king. Their son Telemachus, who has grown up fatherless, is facing death at the hands of the suitors who see him as an obstacle in their relentless pursuit of Penelope and the kingdom.

Odysseus has changed too. Scarred by his experience of war, he is no longer the mighty warrior his people remember. But he is forced to face his past in order to rediscover the strength needed to save his family and win back the love he has lost.

Release Date: 6th December

Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Charlie Plummer
Directed by: Uberto Pasolini

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but this film is coming out 20 years after "Troy". In the odyssey, Odysseus took 20 years to return from Troy to Ithaca. So if Sean Bean had left Troy at the end of that film, he's be getting back to Ithaca about now. So I'm choosing to believe that this is in the same "ancient greek legends" cinematic universe.

Is there anything Ralph Fiennes can't play, such an amazing actor.

I always believed that Odysseus bow was a compound bow (with pulleys) that's why nobody knew how to string it (or didn't had enough force) and it could shoot straight through the axes. Being such a smart man, and pulleys being viable since antiquity, maybe it's possible.

That man is a man of constant sorrow. He's seen troubles throughout his days.

This looks absolutely amazing - when artists take a story from mythology and make it so real that you can see, smell, and even taste it - then it becomes brilliant storytelling. Putting to life for everyone to see: the Magic As If. The stories of Ancient Greece were and are epic - it just takes the right kind of people to tell them correctly.

That was superb. From A to Z. Glad to see there is still people knowing how to do these kind of movies (actors and producers...)

Whoever can string my husband's old bow
And shoot through twelve axes cleanly
Will be the new king, sit down at the throne
And for with me as his queen

I nearly got this story. Before 9/11.. I was physically hunted by my family to take to the recruiter’s. It was like everybody was under a damn spell to put me in… they finally got me… 1 year later was 9/11… I spent the next 10 years going back and forth to Iraq with the LCACs. Absolutely blessed over there. But after those 10 years were over… my curse began… I’m still trying to get back to my family but she wasn’t as classy as the queen in the story. And the kid was too young to remember anything special. Over time I just turned into the bad guy. Greek tragedy.

Ralph Fiennes is a surprisingly good action hero! He was great in Kingsman.

Went to see it today at the DCA Dundee, just 10 people watching in the afternoon session but it was quite a good film. Homer and The Odyssey never ages. There was the introduction in the plot of Ulisses father, the travel to mainland of Telemachus and the arrow and bow scene, but beside this very true to the epic poem of Homer.

if there is any actor that should play this part, its him. i cant think of a better actor to play Odysseseus. shame we had to wait nearly 50 yrs for this remake but glad we are getting it.

The Iliad gets more attention from Hollywood but the key theme of the Odyssey is not understood & given the same coverage

When all the external battles are fought and won you still have to fight the internal ones!

Wow, I can't wait for this. I've loved The Odyssey all my life, and only just finished reading another translation. Odysseus's return, and the settling with the suitors, is the highlight, and I am looking forward to seeing Ralph Fiennes playing the timeless hero.
