When B-52 Bombers Scared The Soviet Navy In 1981

In 1981, the Soviet Naval Fleet, along with their Tu-95 Bear bombers flying from Afghanistan, were shadowing the US Navy's 7th Fleet and its carriers. The Americans decided to respond with long-range B-52 bombers, but there was a problem. A Soviet intelligence-collecting trawler was on a 24/7 patrol off the coast of Guam, so they employed a trick! The B-52s flew in darkness, using the frequencies of the KC-135 tanker, successfully escaping the Soviet trawler. When the B-52s reached the Persian Gulf, they were vectored toward the Soviet Fleet and scared them in a funny way.

😂 I remember the time a CV tried to detect a B52 on their radar while they were practicing "low flying". They didn't locate them... The B52 decided to "pass again"... There is apicture of the plane basically below of the flightdeck. I remember someone commented "CV: we can't see you in the radar. B52: try with the sonar!" 😅😅😅

shows how good the b-52's really are, been flying since the early 1950's and still a force to be reckoned with!

A TU-95 flew over the Nimitz in 2007. We knew it was coming for several hours, doors open to show it wasn't holding munitions, like a "I know where you are" action. Our squadron had the alert and escorted it away. Our pilot got close enough in the F/A-18 that he could see the Bear pilot had a mustache. 😉

I was on the USS Midway that year on our India Oceans mission and remember having to deal with Russian Bears.

TU-95s have such a loud and unique sound that I doubt those Soviet sailors would mistake. You can hear them earlier than you can see them when they are flying low. Big difference with the sound of jet powered B-52.

I was stationed inboard the USS White Palins out of Yokosuka, Japan. We were actually part of the helicopter detachment assigned to the White Plains, aka, The Orient Express! Anyway, I remember this incident and it happened again with our carrier, but we launched F14's to intercept! Our pilots told the Russian bomber pilots that if they didn't open their bomb bay doors, they would shoot them out of the sky, I have a picture of the event! Good memories!

I'm privileged to say that I was a B-52H mechanic from 1977 to 1981. When the Cold War ended, a Soviet general was asked why the Soviets never tried a pre-emptive strike against the United States. His reply "The B-52."

After Gulf War One, an Iraqi general was asked why he surrendered with 6, 000 of his soldiers. He said it was because of the B-52 bombing raids. The interviewer said "But you were never bombed." The general responded "Yes, that's right." Hearing from his fellow generals what it was like to be assaulted by the B-52 led this man to surrender and save his men from a similar experience.

I miss both the Grumman A-6 Intruder and the Vought A-7 Corsair "Maneater". They were both durable, capable, low-level, heavy-lifting, attack

The B-52 pass you show was NOT a low level pass. It was a Close-In pass. I have 1980 photos of a 52 pass in the I-O past USS RANGER at 60-80 feet!

I was stationed overseas onboard the USS San Jose AFS 7 out of Guam...seen something very similar in 1982

Yeah, the fact that the B52's didn't have counter-rotating propellers should've given them away...

The coolest story is when a Russian cruiser was harassing a carrier fleet in the Mediterranean. The admiral ordered a low level supersonic fly over of the cruiser. The concussion from the sonic boom blew the boiler out and stopped the cruiser dead in the water.

May God bless all the Men and women of the Armed forces of the United States of America, on station and on Duty. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Safe journey in the New Year 2024. For I know you are standing tall at night. So that I and my family may sleep. God bless you all! USA 🇺🇸 🌎

Very Strange, I was there on station in 1981. I never saw the MIDWAY CV41 anywhere in the area. My ship CV62 Was on station from December 1980 to June 1981.
Our Refief ship was the USS IKE!
🤔. NOT quite accurate.

First passed: Soviet soldiers 'Oh! American bombers! They are harmless, let's wave at them and let's get back in and have some coffee.
Second passes: Soviet soldiers still driving coffee.

B52 to US carrier: I’m passing your position now.
US carrier: I can’t make visual on you. What’s your altitude?
B52: Look down!
