Video submission from Team 5: Santiago Calatrava, LLC

O’Hare’s Global Terminal by Santiago Calatrava is a masterwork of modern terminal architecture. With a glass façade and dramatic shell-like roof soaring over the approach road, the building unifies the terminal complex while establishing itself as its centerpiece.
Inside, vaulted, light-filled spaces celebrate both the grandeur and simplicity of bygone travel as customers move easily to and from gate areas enlivened by Chicago-focused concessions in an airy, park-like setting.
Convenient links to adjacent terminals, satellite concourses, and public transit support a future Vision plan that transforms the area opposite the Terminal into a vibrant hotel, retail and business complex.

I was Calatrava’s lead pedestrian planner for the NYC World Trade Center Transportation Hub...first hand, he’s a genius and the project of my lifetime!

I was between this and Foster. I will vote for this design because I prefer the cleaner vertical lines on the roof as opposed to the Foster grid. I also feel this design lets in the most sunlight.

Its wins for me by means of drama and inspiration. I also like the architects work elsewhere. I like the elevated train inside. The park wont get used most of the year, too cold for flowers and outside security. a greenhouse could be more interesting.

I'm an engineer and you won out of the 5 designs.

I really like how they have picked up on the "URBS IN HORTO" (City in a Garden) motto. I assume they would build the park areas over the ugly surface parking lots as they have built Grant Park over parking garages. I don't think they would replace the O'hare parking garages though - I assume that is just creative license on the architect's part and they would compromise on keeping the garage structure while covering the surface lots?

So can Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 handle international arrivals as well?

Would’ve been better if the garage and hotel were still there, still a great design

So, what happens to the Hotel and the parking garage? This design looks like it's overreaching by focusing a lot of the space across from the terminal that's supposed to be the focus. It looks like it's gonna be the most expensive and the least practical of the whole bunch. Chicago barely maintains the airport today. Leaks from roofs happen quite often, plants and trees don't get watered often, the climate is either too warm during the summer or too cold during the winter, and even rodents and pests are spotted in the airport from time to time. For a city that barely pays for maintenance, how does this design help?
