Precious gems have been cut, polished and traded in Amsterdam for hundreds of years.

One of the most infamous is the ‘Banjarmasin Diamond’, that’s on display in the Rijksmuseum.

It was taken by the Dutch from the Indonesian Sultan of Banjar, during their 350 years of colonial rule.

Now the descents of the Sultan want it back.

it is a bit rich to see the BBC talk about Dutch stolen items when the British Museum is basically an active crime scene.

You are wrong in one fact:
Indonesian independence wasn't gained from Dutch. It was gained by our own oppression.

In fact, after 1945, Dutch government and the alliance still attack us until 1949.

*Similarly Britain should return the Kohinoor Diamond to India. The British should also return artefacts stolen from India.*

*This comment is in good sense. We are on friendly terms now so this is the best time to do it.*

I am from Indonesia, To restore justice, Netherlands government should bring all boties back to Indonesia not only this diamond although it will never bring the live of our ancestors and dignity.
Also, other countries who feel the same.

"Taken by the Dutch". Such a pleasant way to put it. If it were some Iranian Shah, rhey would have said, looted and pillaged.

At least the Dutch are secure and evolved enough in their own culture to admit/apologize for the atrocities committed in the name of enlightenment despotism .

The BBC has turned into a cesspit of crap and trying to find a gem in the schedule is almost impossible these days.

I'm just gonna open a debate:
- fake news
- diamond was not a thing here back then
- it's a cheap news production
- the diamond display looks pathetic

Bravé, Caroline!!! This just coincides with what is currently unfolding in most of the Western world. I feel your honest acceptance of the "ugly" coinage of the so-called "Dutch rule." Colonization is none other than the policy of expansion and to gain "surplus values" derived from other people's labor. Yes, it should be returned as well or sooner or later, the conquistador statue, will be "toppled" like 'Coen' which remains standingstill in the Netherlands. Just sayin':) Bravo!
