"Heartattack And Vine" by Tom Waits from the album 'Heartattack And Vine'

Lyrics

liar liar with your pants
on fire, white spades hang-
in’ on the telephone wire,
gamblers reevaluate along
the dotted line, you’ll
never recognize yourself
on heartattack and vine.

doctor lawyer beggar
man thief, philly joe remark-
able looks on in disbelief,
if you want a taste of mad-
ness, you’ll have to wait in
line, you’ll probably see
someone you know on
heartattack and vine.

boney’s high on china
white, shorty found a punk,
don’t you know there ain’t
no devil, there’s just god
when he’s drunk, well this
stuff will probably kill
you, let’s do another line,
what you say you meet me
down on heartattack and
vine.

see that little jersey girl
in the see-through top,
with the peddle pushers
sucking on a soda pop, well
i bet she’s still a virgin but
it’s only twenty-five ’til
nine, you can see a million
of ’em on heartattack and
vine.

better off in iowa against
your scrambled eggs, than
crawling down cahuenga
on a broken pair of legs,
you’ll find your ignorance
is blissful every goddamn
time, you’re waitin’ for the
rtd on heartattack and vine.

When I returned to Pennsylvania, I reconnected with my old church. I found out that the new pastor is a Tom Waits fan, and incorporates his songs when he talks about sin.

He is the best reverend I ever had.

He’s never written a bad song. He’s unique in still walking this world and immortal. Chocolate Jesus in a bottle of bourbon

A treasure trove of great lyrics, "well i bet she's still a virgin but it's only 25 till nine", "don't you know there ain't no devil, there's just God when he's drunk", "if you want a taste of madness, well you'll have to get in line".

Thank the Lord for giving us the likes of Tom and Captain Beef heart true originals who don't give a toss what's musically trendy or hip. They do there own thing and are all the more respected for it

I love this. When they say, "you can't take it with you when you go" about material wealth. Tom takes that and looks at the human experience and the spiritual wealth. I K ow for certain, wether we want or not, we do take it with us when we go.
That's the beauty of that song. And obviously on my funeral playlist. Yes, I have been adding music to my funeral playlist. That way I get good music when I die. That's all I really want. I have two loved ones who get to choose from the fairly long list. My younger sister (my twin born 2 years, 9 months after me) gets executive control. My dad (if still alive) gets a say, but not control. My sister gets executive power.

Being 66 today with loads of life experience, I'm telling everybody that if you want to know what life's about you have to do just three things: 1/ Listen well to "Desolation Row" by Bob Dylan 2/ Listen well to "Heartattack and Vine" by Tom Waits and 3/ Read "Ulysses" by James Joyce. Do this, and you'll be awfully well oriented.

I honestly cannot believe this is the same genius that gave us ‘Chocolate Jesus’, ‘Goin Out West’ and ‘Little Drop Of poison’ 😮

On the off chance Tom actually reads these comments: Someone just told me that you don't play any material from your first two albums. Is that true? Btw, your music is absolute genius and has made my life richer and better from the moment I discovered Rain Dogs as a 14 year old. Thank you Tom!

I loved the fact that Tom Waits' song "On The Nickle Over There" was used as the recurring theme throughout the very poignant and moving movie "The Atlanta Child Murders"! The music haunting and the storey was so sad, disturbing and the fact little boys were being mircelesly murder was so very, very sad and should never have happened! Every time I hear this lovely piece of music I remember these children and their sad gates! John Robertson, Stratford; Ontario🤓😪

I had this album in the 80's and it's only gotten better.
