You are very right. I am one of these guys. I did programming for years from developing web applications to creating ios apps(applications for apples ios os, not cisco ios). The problem with programming is that its very stressful business, the amount of effort you put into development and the return you get is just not fair. Plus there is no certifications like there is for networking and system administration i remember being awake till 3 in the morning fixing the bug or coming up with a new algorithm. And in terms of employers, one employer needs a guy who can do python and django and the other wants java programmer and the other ruby. Once you are hired you have to go through a ton of code to figureout the existing software they have and then you would be able to do modifications to it. I think networking and system administration are less stressful compared to programing and are also more rewarding in terms of pay.
