Heart Disease and Social Security Disability

What type of heart disease will qualify you for Social Security. As I discuss in this video, Social Security’s chronic heart failure listing is very broad and many disability claimants with cardiac disease will meet the requirements of this listing.

Most of Social Security’s listed impairments are described very narrowly, but the cardiac listing describes a wide variety of heart problems. Social Security clearly understands that disability applicants who are struggling with heart disease would have a very difficult time working.

Even if you do not meet a listing, you may still qualify using a functional capacity argument or under the grid rules. Please reach out to me if you have any questions about how to qualify for disability based on heart disease or any other serious medical condition.

Thank you for making these videos. I am a 55 years old male and for the last 16 years I worked as an over the road truck driver until January 2020 when I ended up in the emergency room with severe chest pain and trouble breathing. I ended up having a triple bypass surgery that resulted in a sternum nonunion. For almost a year I kept complaining about having excruciating chest pain just to be told by the family doctor and the cardiologist that it is normal after an open heart surgery. I applied for disability and I was denied twice. I changed my doctors and the new ones discovered the sternum nonunion condition that led to another surgery to fix the problem. I received a donor bone graft along with some plates on my sternum but months later my chest bone is still cracked and moving around. Meanwhile, I hired an attorney to represent me with the disability case. I definitely need to have another reconstructive surgery that according to the surgeon will be more extensive than the previous ones but the out coming it’s not promising at all. I’m very depressed, I have panic attacks and anxiety on top of the severe chest pain that I have to live with for the past two and a half years. I can not drive at all because of the broken chest nor do any other activities. I never thought that the sternum is such an important bone in the human body. The prescribed Hydrocodone doesn’t help much and the depression medications turned me into a zombie. I’m afraid to go have a third surgery especially after I was told that most likely I might have more discomfort with it. On December 16, 2022 I am scheduled to have the disability hearing with the judge (video) at the courthouse though the judge will be in a different city. I am very nervous and my attorney didn’t prepare me much. What can I do to prepare for the hearing and do you think that I have a good chance to be approved? I haven’t worked since January 2020 when I had the triple bypass surgery and I know that I am not able to do any work no matter how hard I would try. My chest hurts nowadays even when I breathe or just talk. I’m a mess physically and mentally but also very scared about the upcoming hearing. I don’t have any faith in the system anymore. Anticipating your answer, I thank you again.

Hello, I'm 55, i have been seeing my cardiologist with documentation for 17 years . I have 26 stents, a total occlusion of the right artery, and have chronic heart failure. my last stent was 6 months ago and I'm unable to recover after any physical or mental stress induced exertion. I am waiting to hear if they will approve my disability and that alone has been giving chest pain and SOB. what are my chances?
