GREGORY ALAN ISAKOV - 'AMSTERDAM' (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

This video was filmed over the course of a month and a half, using stop-motion animation, dioramas, and live shadow puppetry. It is a continuation of director Laura Goldhamer's past techniques of mixing stop motion with live action; however, this time, the process was deeply collaborative and organic in nature, as the video was made at the farm that is home to the musician himself.

I was recruited to play baseball on the east coast. My dad and I took a tour of a few other schools in New England we decided to drive up into the Boston area from Long Island. I was gassed so I feel asleep for an hour while he drove. When I woke up, this song was playing while we drove through Providence in Rhode Island. I had never felt so at peace. There was nothing to say and we just sat and drove through the town on a beautiful sunny day during the summer. I'll always remember that feeling of serenity and genuine happiness. It was a really cool moment with my Dad and I'll remember it for the rest of my life. Thanks Greg.

Crazy to think there are songs like this that sit for 9 years, waiting for you to find them on a random Tuesday night. Keep up the good work Greg

how in earth does stuff like this only have 186, 000 views? Gregory Alan Isakov is one of the greatest singers of our generation yet nobody has heard of him...

I walked down the aisle to the version of this song with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. Couldn't ask for a better song <3

Your songs are like winter sunlight, takes away all the coldness. Quite happy to find you.

This song is one of those songs where you can literally feel the music. that tingly feeling you get in your whole body that just makes you want to close your eyes and just sway to the music.

Lyrics ...
All inside our Amsterdam she hides
Watery-eyed
That howling wind, she's waving hi
Her other hand's in mine

Oh silhouette
She's growing tall and fine
She's got my back
She'll follow me down every street
No matter what my crime

All inside our Amsterdam she flies
Hoarding the kites
That howling wind, she'll take everything
But she's easy on the eyes

Churches and trains
They all look the same to me now
They shoot you some place
While we ache to come home somehow

My favorite lines:
"Churches and trains
They all look the same to me now
They shoot you some place
While we ache to come home somehow"

^^ exactly what I was thinking while listening to this song almost non-stop on a train from Landscheid, Germany to Amsterdam in January of this year. This could not have been a more perfect song for my homesickness, heartache, and scared soul to listen to at the time.

Thank you so much, Gregory. I am forever a fan of yours.

I love this song. I live in Amsterdam, near a windmill, and this song really touches me—especially because at the beginning, you can actually see the windmill. To me, this song represents feeling protected and safe because of Amsterdam. It feels like the song is sung from the perspective of the city itself, not a man. So the line 'she follows me down every street' makes me think of how I follow Amsterdam through every street. I’ve truly become myself in this city, and I literally found myself here. That’s why the line 'in Amsterdam she flies' resonates with me so deeply!

The song even brought me to tears when I was on my way to view a new house, just outside of Amsterdam. It felt as if I was leaving a part of myself behind. But no matter where I go, I carry the city with me—it will always be in my heart.

I’ve had a really hard day with my anxiety. My chest has been so tight for the most part. I’m now laying in bed with this song on and reading my bible, feeling at ease.

In my opinion, Gregory has the most beautiful and haunting voice I’ve ever heard. Hands down.

Probably the best song of the world. It touches the middle of existance, somehow in it's tune I feel the Begining and the End together...

I'm from Amsterdam...it's so nice to see how Greg and band translated the scenery in what they wrote. Just smiling here.

I walked down the isle to my then fiancé’s best friends playing this song on voila, violin and cello. Then walked back down the isle with my husband to them playing the stable song. Those two songs have been my favorite for many years and it was so meaningful to be married to my love between them. Our pastor who married us unfortunately passed away a couple days ago so I’m reminiscing with my baby boy now. Gregory is a gift.

Having visited Amsterdam a handful of times now, coincidentally starting a long-distance relationship with a Dutch girl just a week before the US travel ban started in March 2020, and then later playing this song in several concert halls (always giving the man credit) I can say this song makes me feel incredibly grateful to be alive at the same time as Greg... The waltzing feel of this tune and the piano will always resonate with me.
