What are 'forever chemicals'?

PFAS, often dubbed as "forever chemicals," have been found virtually everywhere, including in people's blood. In March 2023, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set limits on six PFAS in drinking water, which is a first for the agency.

Brittany Trang, STAT's Sharon Begley Science Reporting Fellow, explains what these chemicals are, and how scientists are working on ways to destroy these compounds once and for all.

My long ago 4th year university research project involved the chemistry of C-F bonds, it also involved XeF2 as a reagent. Flourine chemistry is pretty fascinating all round.
