I fondly remember my Dad lifting me up to the front ladder near the "cowcatcher" of 4014 in the Pomona fairgrounds in 1964 when I was 7 y.o. -- now I just saw the Summer schedule for 4014 to be in Laramie, Wy. during a first stop on their Western US 2024 tour. Just my rare good luck our family will be traveling to Yellowstone NP on June 30th. and will be passing through Laramie before noon that day -- Hope to revisit my old friend --- this time, alive and steaming !

I don't think I could have said that any better myself. Thank you, Union Pacific. We shall once again see, and hear, a Big Boy ride the rails again. I can't wait for that day.

YES! A Company in Maine makes Bio coal. Its market, due to costs to make is currently overseas. Thermogen is the company. That said, in the midwest...
Researchers from the University of Minnesota teamed up with the nonprofit Sustainable Rail International to create the Coalition for Sustainable Rail (CSR) and CSR Project 130. Their top goal is to make the cleanest, most powerful passenger train locomotive in the world.

This was a good video the kind of video that is informative with no screaming kids in the background.

I have waited for a Big Boy to be revived since first learning of them. Although I never imagined in my lifetime, one of beast will roam the rails once more. Thank you Union Pacific for restoring this Big Boy Locomotive for America.

Manga, you hit on something, most people do NOT know that Steam output from the "head" to push the RODS is rerouted up top to help increase the Flue efficiency, and escapes as "pufs" in sync with the side Drive Rods.. YUP steam comes out the Flue with smoke... Also Oil conversion may make heat efficiency higher with a well planned "firebox", or "burner" design

There is Bio coal being made that would easily run in a big boy. In fact its being used in a loco built in 1937 to re prove the efficiency of coal. Anthracite coal has more BTU per ton than any fuel on earth, however the Big boys ran on "dirty" semi bituminous coal, from UP owned coal mines. They only "tried to switch" due to Coal Union strikes..The most efficient coal is in the east. The Bio coal company here sells their products in Europe as costs to make are high. It is Carbon Neutral

Nice to see. Any idea how much longer till she rolls? And what route will she take? Cajon through Las Vegas to Salt Lake City? Or Palmdale cutoff to Donner Pass and on the Nevada deserts?

Csrail is trying to prove that point that steam can be more useful than diesels. They are working on a 4-6-4 to be modernized just for that purpose except it will use biofuel.

Well unless it goes south of donner it will. But it will go to Salt Lake City unless it takes BNSF or the sunset route.

Why are the rod bearing Brass, instead of Phosphor Bronze?

With the cost of fuel rising has it ever been thought to design a new steam engine to use coal. I know that sounds nuts but the key is get
