A gravity hill is a place where a slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope due to the layout of the surrounding land, creating the optical illusion that water flows uphill or that a car left out of gear will roll uphill.

Remember going there and doing this back in 1987 with my cousins at night. Was totally freaked out 😁

I went there in the 90's . It freaked me out until I got out and looked around. It's the landscape and the horizon. You get the idea of what level is from the horizon. If you had a very accurate altimeter you'de see you are rolling down a hill.

If you view the 'hill' from the junction on Pynest Road and Avery lane, you can see where the Avery goes up and Pynest goes down. So when you are on Hangmans Hill from Avery it looks like you're going up to Pynest, but from the other way you can see that it does in fact dip 'down' to Pynest and that Avery just raises a lot more.

For the people who don’t understand why this is happening, this is called a gravity hill. It’s a place where it’s actually a slight downhill slope but due to the surrounding land it gives off the optical illusion that the slope is uphill when it’s not. This why the car appears to be rolling up hill when it’s in fact rolling down the hill and also if you was to pour a bucket of water on the hill, it would look likes it rolling up when it’s in fact rolling down wards.

I must argue that the scientists saying its an optical illusion must be certified legally blind.
This phenomenon is not an illusion. Been there many times & still can't figure it out. At night, its very eerie & a strange feeling. Went out the car & wondered around that part to the bridge where it stops. Knowing theres a graveyard nearby & Hangmans hill there, well, good night.

Nice one - me and a friend did the same. It's no hoax you really do roll uphill.

I had to see it myself, came from sidemen

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but there's a similar road in Scotland that does the same.
Scientists, Land surveyors and a Psychologist debunked the urban legend on that road.
I can only assume it's the same thing here.
It's a tilted land mass and the surrounding land makes it seem like it is going uphill when really it's the other way round.
Basically an optical illusion.
