Jonny Brownlee: Alistair helps brother over finish line in dramatic World Series finale

Exhausted Briton Jonny Brownlee needed to be helped over the finish line by brother Alistair in a dramatic end to the Triathlon World Series in Mexico.

Leading with 700m left, Jonny, 26, began to weave over the road in hot and humid conditions in Cozumel.

Third-placed Alistair, 28, caught his brother, propping him up for the final couple of hundred metres before pushing him over the line in second place.

They were overtaken by South African Henri Schoeman, the eventual winner.

Victory in Mexico would have given Jonny the world title, but second place left him just four points behind Mario Mola.

The Spaniard was fifth on Sunday to top the overall standings.

Jonny, Olympic silver medallist at Rio 2016 and a bronze medallist at London 2012, collapsed to the ground the moment he crossed the finish line.

He required treatment but later tweeted he was OK, with a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed on a drip.

Alongside a video clip of the finish of the race, he also wrote: "Normally when you have had too much to drink. This time it was the opposite #ouch"

I loved how he pushed his brother over the line before he stepped over the line himself that's what sportsmanship is all about

The best part; he pushed him over the line so he would place second, that's some class right there ladies and gentleman.

The older brother, you can see, did not think twice about Losing his gold medal chance to help his little brother. I think he was more concerned about his brother getting to finish the race and not having to have the sadness of not getting to finish the race, then whether they won anything or not. The is the true big Brother (or sister as the case may be). We look out for our siblings especially when it counts.

I am an emergency doctor, and until now I am a medical director in a hospital in Cozumel Mexico.
I was Jonathan Brownlee's doctor that Sunday. I received him at the hospital where I work.
He was very dehydrated when he got to the hospital, so we started IV fluids and management for heat stroke. He recovered a few minutes later. His response to treatment was impressive.
He was very nice, and it was very kind of him that he spoke some Spanish with us, even though we speak English, he took advantage of the situation to practice his Spanish.

I was so touched to see what really matter in life!! Not the medal but the loyalty he shared to his brother made me cry....They won more than the race!!

For me, this single act will always epitomise love, honour, sportsmanship and what it means to be British. One competitor who sacrifices his own position to assist his brother over the line defines sportsmanship. It was a beautiful moment not only in sport, but for what it means to be human. If we could all just put our brother before our own ambitions, the world would be a better place.

It's crazy his brother had the energy to even help him like that

That is actually so sweet and heartwarming. Not only holding up his brother the last couple 100 meters of a Triathlon! (in horrible conditions that he just competed in too) but then making sure his brother crossed the line first to clinch second place. Jonny may not have earned the world title that day but his brother definitely got the world's best sibling award.

I cry every time I see this. I always prayed that my family was strong like this. To put some one before your self is always a blessing

No one gives a shit about the guy who ran past him to win but the brothers will go down in history for what sportsmanship is about.

No matter how many times I see this it still brings a lump to my throat. This along with Derek Redmond and his Dad helping across the line when he tore a hamstring are footage you never forget.
