Tomoyuki Yamashita (山下 奉文) was a Japanese officer and convicted war criminal, who was a general in the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Yamashita led Japanese forces during the invasion of Malaya and Battle of Singapore, with his accomplishment of conquering Malaya and Singapore in 70 days earning him the sobriquet "The Tiger of Malaya" and led to the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill calling the ignominious fall of Singapore to Japan the "worst disaster" and "largest capitulation" in British military history. Yamashita was assigned to defend the Philippines from the advancing Allied forces later in the war, and while unable to prevent the Allied advance, he was able to hold on to part of Luzon until after the formal Surrender of Japan in August 1945.

"Convicted war criminal"? I dare say if we lost the war many of our heroes would have been classed as War Criminals.

WE INDIANS ARE ALWAYS THANKFUL TO JAPAN FOR THEIR HELP IN OUR FREEDOM STRUGGLE. WE NEVER FORGET THAT JAPAN WAS THE FIRST COUNTRY TO RECOGNISE INDIAN GOVERNMENT IN EXILE AND SUPPORTING OUR INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY TO FIGHT AGAINST THE BRITISH ARMY.
THANK YOU JAPAN

the battle of bukit chandu: 🗿
(yes i know the malayan soldiers didnt win the battle but it was still impressive. 42 malayans vs 13, 000 imperial japanese, in total the malayans lost all 42 of their men but the japanese lost 800 of theirs)

He was convicted unfairly, he didn’t commit war crimes but his subordinates did despite his best effort.

It was sanji iwabuchi who was responsible for the massacre of 100, 000 civilians in Manila. during the battle for Malaya/singapore you can’t quite blame a single person for what the soldiers did, one person cannot simply know every single thing that their soldiers do and the soldiers themselves will not just willingly tell their superiors that they’re going out murdering and raping civilians, he also said to evacuate Manila to prevent its destruction and instead fight an attritional war in the mountains. Some of the war crimes were even committed with him not even in the same country when it happened. Not saying it was okay to happen but he was basically a scapegoat for all the evil things the Japanese military conducted and I’m saying this as a Filipino, MacArthur wanted him dead at all cost but I think they got the wrong person.
