Hyundai has unveiled its highly anticipated Inster small electric SUV, its price-busting city car that’s expected to land in Australia from around $40,000, squarely targeting the affordable Chinese EV territory.

Here, Chasing Cars journalist Olek Novak takes a deep dive walkaround at Hyundai’s most affordable and most compact electric to date at the 2024 Busan International Mobility Show.

Based on the petrol-powered Korea-only Casper which has been on sale in that market since 2021, the Inster - to be known as the Casper EV in Korea - has been lengthened compared to its petrol sibling, promising more interior space thanks to a longer wheelbase.

The Inster will be offered in both standard and long range specification, with the latter targeting a WLTP electric range of up to 355km.

Stay tuned for Olek’s full first drive review in one of the final pre-production prototypes coming very soon!

Are those air vents on the bottom of the front seats? Looks interesting.

That's a cool/practical looking EV! Would make a sweet little car to commute to work in and cruise around town.

Does the Hyundai Inster come with V2G capability?

40k is a bit overpriced. Realistically, 30k starting would give them an instant winner

I really need the Inster Cross, AWD version with Off-Road torque rework and drive mode.

For the global market, Inster would use LFP batteries to reduce costs, while NCM batteries are already confirmed for the Korean model.

BYD Dolphin and MG4 are all under A$40K. GMW Ora Cat is about A$35K. This Inster while nice needs to be closer to A$30K if they are to lure customers away from the above 3 models.

~$40K, they jest, more like $20k+, even then I would think 10x and forget it. What will be the cost of the battery, that is the decider

I'd rather get an inglis for 25k that's a ridiculous price for a bubble car

The price will need to be lower to compete with Chinese cars.
