Understanding Opposition in pawn endgame with Carlsen and Firouzja

The Namaste greeting has been doing wonders for Magnus at the Norway Chess 2020. He has managed to win the title with one round to spare. But it also happened because of his unrelenting endgame play in the 9th round against Alireza Firouzja. What looked like a sure shot draw, ended up in Magnus' favour. What exactly went wrong? How did Alireza Firouzja not understand the basic concept of opposition? In this video IM Sagar Shah explains to you all the little intricacies that you need to know related to pawn endgames and opposition as well as the slightly advanced concept of distant opposition.

Magnus is not drawing before asking all the questions:
Magnus: "Do you know long opposition on the kingside?"
Alireza: Ok.
Magnus: "Do you know long opposition on the queenside?"
Alireza: No.
Magnus: "Perfect! :)"

Magnus has been a pro for over 17 years, longer than Alierza's age, the fact that Firouzja got him that far is actually more impressive.

Alireza played his last move and got up. He had no time to go away from the board anyway- he was playing on increment. Alireza realised immediately after playing that it was losing. Magnus played the move and Alireza offered a handshake which Magnus denied 😂 because of COVID

It's worth saying that there are two ideas in this type of endgame (the backward pawn structure basically): the opposition but also the "switch of the side" if the opponent is not careful. What I'm saying is that at 7:44 it's true that Kd2 is an only move but Kc2 loses to Ke6/e7 (and not Kc6 taking opposition, which draws because you can't really make your opposition concrete: Kc2 Kc6 Kb2 Kb6 (if you go forward I defend with opposition) Kc2 (not Ka2 because of Kc5 and I can't play Kc3) Ka6 Kb2 Kb6 Kc2 Ka5 (What else?) Kc3 (now I must take diagonal opposition) and that's a draw.
After Kc2 you have to play Ke6/e7 instead because you switch side and I'm unable to reach you on the kingside: Kd2 Kf7 Ke2 Kg6 Kf3/f2 Kh5 (notice how if Kf2 Kh5 Black is losing opposition bit still wins).
To resume, if you're defending you basically have to both remain of the same file of the other king ti avoid switching side and keep an eye on the opposition

Unbelievable that a player of alireza's caliber can make such a basic blunder, with 15secs on the clock and 10s increment.
