People should know that cans with PULL-TOP lids have a much higher failure rate.

Great video! FYI, for coffee drinkers, I opened a pack of Peete’s Coffee that’s about 15 months old. It’s still great! Funny because everywhere you search, they say coffee starts losing its flavor after a few months. I couldn’t tell a difference. With coffee prices on the rise, this might be something to note. 😊

I know it’s a little expensive but I’ve been buying at least one freeze dried meal in the camping aisle at Walmart every trip I make. I just bought 3 meals of Mountain House biscuits & gravy for $4 per meal. Shelf stable until 2055. I store them in 5 gallon buckets in my basement and forget about them until needed. I also try to buy at least 1 #10 can of freeze dried food per month. Try to buy items with the longest shelf life. 🇺🇸

Keystone meats go out five or six years because they cook the meats in the cans. The beef, ground beef and the chicken are surprisingly good. Don’t eat pork so I can’t say anything about that.

I have found that if the fruit is soft but still smells and looks good and nothing is wrong with the can, I make fruit roll ups.

After watching your video about the pineapple incident, I dehydrated what I had. It took about 2 days, the rings came out the best, then chunks. The crushed remained sticky. It was tasty for the day or 2 I kept it.

Several months back going through my stash I found cans of Manwich that expired in 2009. I opened it & it was just fine. A couple cans had some rust starting so I tossed those.

Thank you, AG, very informative; in several years of prepping, I only had to throw away a bottle of ketchup, I wasn't confident to keep. If you make an inventory every autumn, donate close to expiring date products that you know you won't use, to your local foodbank, there's much misery going round now...and if you can afford it, help them with more than that.

Excellent advice!
Thank you.

Yes. I, too rotate foods.

So true about fruits and acidic foods going bad first.

I do experiment with canned goods. Opened a can of Clam Chowder two days ago that was ten years past the sell by date. It smelled fine but most liquid was gone. I added some clam juice to the mix, cooked and ate with no issues. The big thing with canned goods is when you open them they smell fine, it is likely fine to eat....you just have to use common sense.

I grew up during a time before those dates even existed. I really believe that later generations of folks have grown up believing that they have to have some kind of warning label on everything in their lives. If that can is not leaking, bulging, or swollen up then more than likely it's good.
