In this video we put together a super cheap
4240 1080P Bazzite Linux gaming pc with used parts from eBay. you can also use this setup with windows installed but I really wanted a living room gaming pc with a nice console style interface like the steam deck but wanted a bit more power. This Budget gaming pc is powered by a Ryzen 5 3500 and backed by an AMD Radeon RX 590 and handles 1080P gaming very well like Cyberpunk 2077, Ghost of Tsushima, Skyrim, and many more.

I feel like Linux Gaming is really starting to arrive.

The fact you're installing Linux because you want that "console like" experience and nobody even blinks really just emphasizes how far we've come. This would've been unthinkable just 6 years ago.

I switched to Linux for all my gaming on the 3rd of July 2024, so nearly 5 weeks as of this comment, and so far it's been brilliant. I'm running a 5800X3D with a 4080 Super on Linux Mint.

Cyberpunk 2077, Kingdom Come Deliverance, No Man's Sky were my main time sinks this past month, with a few others thrown in.

So far all the games I've wanted to play through Steam have just worked, I made a video for some friends where I just sat and launched 16 games in a row.

I also installed Lutris which lets you install and play games from the likes of Ubisoft Connect, GOG and EA etc. Got a bunch of games working like Watch Dogs and WD Legion, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Valhalla, The Division 2.

I'm blown away by the work that has been done by people to enable all these Windows based games to run on Linux. From the original ~20 years of work done on WINE, to Valve's Proton compatibility layer which has went back upstream to benefit anyone running any Linux distro, even to run games that aren't on Steam.

At 10:37 regarding Skyrim SE defaulting to the Steam Deck config: using “SteamDeck=0 %command%” (without the quotes) as a launch option should fix it and allow you to access the settings menu in Skyrim. This also works for other games that default to a Steam Deck configuration, and works on the Steam Deck itself too :)

Oh sweet, my brother has been desperate for his own pc for a while now. I think I'll set him up with something like this.

You can't just add the 4GB RAM stick to make it dual channel. Only 8GB total will be dual channel then reverting to single channel. You are gimping the system for a few dollars. Use matched capacity sticks. Surprised at you ETA.

Thank you. These are exactly the sort of builds that many of us are interested in as we can't afford standard gaming hardware. In fact, I'm interested in playing the older titles you demonstrate here as cutting-edge games require cutting-edge hardware. It's much less expensive to play older games *and* there's more information available about which ones are worth playing ;).

Great vid! Love that you do these budget builds, and include where you got the parts, and all the details. I'll use this as a template the next time somebody asks me about building a cheap gaming PC. Thanks ETA!

It finally happened. An ETA Prime build that closely resembles my PC! Mine is a Ryzen 5 2600 + RX 580 which I have since 2018, I bought the CPU on launch day, and even back then the RX580s were overpriced. I remember that the price online was much cheaper, and I ended up almost paying double that and was super bummed out about it. If only I knew that this champ would outlast a motherboard. I love this PC to bits.

This is the first computer I built brand new, upgraded, and maintained. I love your channel, I guess this is a sign that I'm ready to build a new system soon, but this champ just keeps on rocking it and now that I have less time to game, its more than enough for me and my 144hz 1080p monitor which have been with me since the beginning.

SteamDeck=0 %command% to disable steamdeck

SteamDeck=0 %command%

Add this as a launch command to Skyrim, Fallout, this will allow you to edit the settings. Should work for other games. But I know it works on Skyrim/Fallout

I have one of these running my arcade. Came with a 1650. Slapped 32gb of ram in it and it runs everything great. Cost me $200 total with ram.

I would like to see the performance with Windows. It is awesome to see gaming on Linux. Also, I really like your videos on cheap gaming rigs. Keep up the great work! Love your vids.

I put together something similar last year. I used an HP Elite Desk SFF with an i7-8700, added a 1TB NVME and brought over the 1TB SATA SSD I was using with my old system. Cooling was an issue emulating PS3, so I picked up an HP workstation cooler that happened to be compatible and added a pair of Noctua 40mm fans in the back for exhaust. Lastly, I grabbed a used RTX A2000 - the fan was pretty loud, but a trip to Ali Express, $20, and 2 weeks took care of that. Total cost was about $550 which is probably more than I should have spent on this setup, but it's working great with Windows 10 and booting in to Big Box (thanks for your tutorials!). With the cooling from the beefier cooler and the exhaust fans, PS3 runs perfect, and I've been able to get a lot of PC gaming out of the way with it too. Your channel was a great inspiration for the build, and I'm looking forward to several years of service out of it.

Have this setup exactly but with a 1660 super...has been bulletproof since 2020.

Nice little Setup, have a similar in my Workshop.

If mixed components don't run in dual channel, it's not so bad. More RAM always brings significantly more. True to the old saying: RAM can only be replaced by more RAM.

Just as a heads up. Don't buy these so called RX580's with weird names. They'll last about 3-6 months then die.
