No, it's not unusual for a f1x r12 especially when the chain is way out of line in 1st or 2nd gear & riding over uneven Road surfaces.
Roglic showed immense mental strength for it not to effect him.

It's really strange. I ride a shomano 2x11on my road bike and shimano 1x12 mtb with no chain guide on mtb. Never had chain drop on neither. Maybe they were not running a clutch rear derailleur?
