Mason Jar Lid - Caution | Useful Knowledge

See why I don’t use the mason jar lids shown or reuse mason jar lids. Mason jar lids get compromised when sold with the jars in flats, in my opinion. It’s not worth losing jars of canned goods just to save a few dollars on new lids.

The compromise in the lid compound resembles lids that have been already used for canning. Basically I feel it’s like reusing mason jar lids. I do not refuse mason jar lids.

Reusing mason jar lids is really not a good idea unless that’s all you have. Understandably, reuse happened a lot during the pandemic because lids were hard to find. The new mason jar lids in the twelve jars flats look like they are already used.

Wow! Baught some Mason jars 3 weeks ago and noticed when I opened the jars, the lids had edentations on them. I decided to buy all new lids and just use the rings. Common sense and God is good that 2 weeks later He shows me this video! Thanks!

That's why they are to be boiled.

I use used lids for the drys I've put in jars. I put flour, sugar, rice, etc in canning jars to keep them away from critters, like mice and flour moths. I leave the rings on so mice cannot try to remove lids from flour, rice and other foods mice prefer.

Omg. I just used 8 boxes of these jars with these lids and pressure canned with them. I did notice that 5 did not seal. Now im freaked out.

Once that the sealing compound gets hot in the canner, it will remold itself and seal just fine. I guess it doesn't hurt anything to not use them, but seems quite wasteful. I never lose seals either, but I attribute it to good techniques.

I sent 2 emails explaining exactly this issue to Bernardin and crickets.

Goodness! If you boil them with a little bit of baking soda they go back to normal. I do this with all my lids that's been water bathed and reuse them for under pressure. By the way, that's the same technique the Amish do.

I wondered about the same thing. Thanks!

Yes! Compromised and would not keep sealed. They will not rejuvenate in hot water. Don’t can with them!

I kept several dozen new jars in a hot attic, then moved them to a less hot garage before I used them. The lids were sticky like yours. I also throw the metal lids in hot water with my tattler lids when I'm canning. The seals rarely fail. I'd suggest you raise your concerns with the manufacturer, they might be able to address the issue and put your mind at ease. (please post the results if you do this.)

This is an excellent topic to put out, as the more we understand the process the more effective we are at canning. Thanks for bringing it up!

Older folks always reused and boiled lids as long as they weren't damaged. Never had an issue.

Here in Canada, boxes of jars used to come with the lids upside down with the rings on very loosely. And although I did examine the flats prior to use, I wasn’t finding the depression in the sealing compound that is very evident on the lid you showed. I must check to see if new boxes are still packed with the lids turned upside down.

Didn’t throw out the factory lids. Use those for vacuum sealing. They’re perfect if that. I totally see what you’re saying. I’ve gone both ways.
Great video!!!
