A recent poll conducted by CID Gallup showed that 2 out of 5 Costa Ricans wanted to leave the country. 41% of those aged 18-29 year old indicated that they would leave the country if the had the ability to do so. What is causing this ?

In this video I look at some of the economic and employment date that could explain the poll finding.

Great video.... I think a good part of the reason is that as a country that sees so many wealthy tourists visiting that the local population in CR believes that the grass is greener elsewhere.
This might be a tainted view as the employment opportunities for the demographic with the highest desire to leave CR will be very disappointed with the income and living expenses in the US and Canada.

AFTER LIVING 5 YEARS IN COSTA RICA, we understand the desire to "leave CR". Many young people work at low wage jobs, and the young population is large compared to other age groups. So employers are at an advantage. It's WORSE for people over 45 - you CAN'T get a job, since there are so many young people looking !

I used to leave CR to the US, but of course I came back. The issue here in CR is government to a point, and much bureaucracy, and everything and i mean everything is for the central city (no opportunities outside the Metropolitan area).

Costa Rica is a beautiful Country. However, young people want to travel to other Countries!
The male to female ratio in Costa Rica is almost even!
And Food is plentiful!

I am from Costa Rica, 29 years old.

I would leave the country because of multiple reasons, nevertheless I recognize that in Costa Rica we have a freedom whereas in other countries people don't have the same liberty.

My thought is that certain percentage of people victimize themselves instead of trying to strive for a more solid foundation, thus taking a decision to leave a country in the hope that things are going to be easier, better or different.

I'd leave Costa Rica because of certain social culture, low pay, roadblocks for entrepenuers, infrastructure, housing opportunities, etc.

Hey, a young costa rican here, the reason most of the people want to leave CR, is because they romanticize other countries as if they were perfect, they see drugs or homocides and think those things don't happen in canada or spain.
With the jobs, it's partially true, most of my friends have middle school finished and some of them barely have highschool completed, jobs that require unqualified workers are saturated in the country, theres and overflow of jobs that require profesional workers and only like 2 out of 30 of my old classmates are currently going to university.
Also, unqualified workers are decent paying jobs in those countries we mentioned, you can make 200k dollars a year mowing the lawn in USA or Canada.

I am a resident expat living in Costa Rica. I see and full understand the reasons Costa Ricans leave. The Costa Rican educational system could be more educational at every level, by teaching English as the business language in all schools.

Question: I read somewhere that Spaniards have a preference in applying for permanent residency right away and not having to go through two years of temporary residency, would you be able to clarify this?

Great video as usual. I especially like hearing a out the current events in congress. 👍

Hey Roger thanks for another great video. I was wondering when you said that the current political party has been in power for 8 years did you mean the people in the presidency or the people with the majority number of seats because I'm wondering down who really drives the policy in the Costa Rican government system?
