Rescoring the Controversial 2024 Olympic Floor Final

The 2024 Olympic Floor Final created one of the biggest controversies of the Paris Olympic Games. After Jordan Chiles inquired her difficulty score and gained an extra tenth, receiving the bronze medal, the Romanian Federation of Gymnastics appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports, saying that Cecile Landi, Jordan's coach, submitted the inquiry too late- at 1 minute and 4 seconds after the score came up where the maximum was 1 minute. CAS reviewed this case and recommended to the FIG and IOC that Jordan's score inquiry should be revoked. The FIG went through with this and revised the results to the original- with Jordan Chiles fifth- and asked her to return her bronze medal, which would be awarded to Ana Barbosu. Additionally, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea received a 0.1 penalty for an out of bounds that did not actually occur, but this was not inquired because it was not a part of the difficulty score. After this whole mess, I am rescoring each of the routines to see which one I think deserved the bronze medal. Comment down below your thoughts (please avoid showing hate towards any of the gymnasts, all of the fault goes to the judges for their incompetency).

Those judges where beyond incompetent and they are walking away with no punishment at all after creating all this mess

Problem is that now all the 3 athletes lost something
1) voinea not avoiding tie break (why not ex-aequo???)
2) chiles "losing" the medal
3) Barbosu losing the podium ceremony AND very little people now know that she is the real bronze
No happy ending for any of them

I still would put Voinea in 3rd. Artistry is subjective. I enjoyed her routine more than Barbosu's and with the higher start score, she should have placed over the others . Not to mention, in team final, she got a higher score for basically the same routine.

Sabrina deserved the bronze medal. She didn't go out of bounds. Her routine was not judged properly.

Solo se hizo justicia para Ana Barbosu pero ya no se puede volver atrás, le robaron la posibilidad de disfrutar una ceremonia de premiación y ver su bandera izarse 🥺😔

Honestly, Sabrina Voinea. I was surprised her score was so low

I agree with this. The absolute worst possible manner to get to the ultimately correct results. Now the medal lacks it's meaning, while Jordan deserves to be compensated by keeping her medal. FIG messed up HUGE as did the IOC in stripping her of her place. We really don't need to be so extra with the courts and everything when the path forward is clear. Congrats to Ana though, as she no matter what happened was deserving of the/a bronze medal.

Actually, it was Sabrina Voinea that was in 3rd place. Myself and many others believe she should have won the bronze medal. The right thing to do is award all 3 with the bronze.

I honestly wish this was what fig/ioc had done. Replay the routines, score them with slow mo so there are no errors that can happen in the moment of action (like oob deduction, that wasn’t there like come on) and place them like that. Sure, it’s heartbreaking for Jordan that she has to give the medal back, but she just didn’t deserve the medal with what she showed during the final. The whole court drama now is ridiculous tho. And they should definitely implement rules to inquire about ND, because Sabrina was robbed here

Also, why was Jordan score so high on execution? She got even less in this review than she got irl. 0.266 margin is A LOT to talk about. Some even mention she should have gotten a -0.3 or even a -0.5 for that landing. Are americans overscored on both difficulty AND execution?

Total agree with all of this, but especially Chiles' score. I've been involved in elite gymnastics for over 30 years, and used to be a judge, and my instant reaction in real-time was that the ranking for 3rd-4th-5th was Barbosu, Voinea, then Chiles(I had a further 0.1 deduction from the E score). I was really shocked when Chiles' score came in as high as it did.

Great analysis! Hope people could understand this and stop shading Ana Barbosu 😢 Jordan didn’t deserve that medal but I agree that this wasn’t gymnasts fault. So sad

Wow after watching this i have to change my mind and say the other girl deserved the bronze. Jordan's routine was sloppy. 😢

It was heartbreaking to see the Bronze medal (almost) robbed from Ana Barbosu like that. I'm glad to see that she wound up with it in the end.

The medal rightfully belongs to Sabrina. She got .10 deduction for an imaginary step outside the boundary.

Many people especially Americans who dont understand gymnastics chime in and say she was robbed yadda yadda yadda, it then turns into racial issue, then turns into politics we're driving further away form the real issue.

Sabrina is the ONLY rightful bronze winner. Not Ana, not Jordan, and yet she's the one getting least attention.
1) Jordan's floor has always got a 5.8 throughout Olympics (which means her gogean is never credited ever). And all of the difficulty judges agreed with this. BUT when the inquiry was made suddenly it changed 5.9 despite we all know well that the gogean was underrotated. And the weirdest thing it was accepted in BELOW 90 SECONDS (length of a floor routine) which means the superior jury (the one reviewing and accepting inquiries) DIDN'T EVEN REVIEW IT PROPERLY.

Remember that inquiries are accepted by superior jury, NOT the judges after the score is being posted.

2) Sabrina got OOB penalty for something she didn't even do AND her D score inquiry was REJECTED by the same superior jury who accepted Jordan's inquiry without proper review. While D score can be subjective to an extent, OOB Neutral Deduction is absolute either you're in or you're out. Unfortunately this year's olympic is filled with OOB mistakes, from Sunisa, Kishi Rina, Lieke all got (or didn't get) proper penalty for OOB.

3) As for Ana her 13.7 was well deserved but it's in 4th place (as opposed to Sabrina's real score which is 13.8).

If anything they must INVESTIGATE the SUPERIOR JURY

I think Sabrina did better the Anna (Anna went out of bounds not Sabrina). Jordan didn't stick her landings and looked liked she rushed her whole routine. In addition, Jordan had no artistic movements in her routine. Just my opinion, I have no idea how the scoring works. Lastly, Jordan needs to stop that her medal was taken away because of her color. If that was so then Simone wouldn't have all those World and Olympic Gold medals. The judges messed up it's unfortunate but it happens, they are human.

I hate this for these athletes. I wish they would have just done what USAG and FRG suggested in the first place and give out two bronze medals. There’s no reason Jordan should be stripped of her medal for something that wasn’t her fault. Being stripped of a medal is a punishment for either doping or cheating, neither of which is Jordan guilty. Even if Jordan’s inquiry shouldn’t have been accepted, it was, and now she’s being punished for an error of the judges. This situation is just heartbreaking.

I was hoping you would score this, thank you. Ultimately I don't believe the inquiry was late, I think they were trying to cover their horrible errors which caused 2 athletes to be completely heartbroken for no reason. That was absolutely preventable,

Interesting how you gave Sabrina the same score just with different D score lol. I am absolutely shocked with the whole situation, I can't imagine how disappointed Jordan must be to be asked to return her olympic medal, I feel bad for all 3 of them. I personally think Jordan's double layout chest position was borderline 0.1 but great analysis as usual from you! 😁
