This 2014 old video no longer works for many people, so be sure to watch the new and improved video linked above!

----original video description----
In this quick tip video, I show how you can use a free app called Splashtop to make your Surface act like a wireless monitor or display for your laptop! Use your surface as a monitor . I show how the Surface can be used to mirror your laptop's display or extend the display so that you can be more productive with a second screen. I hope you enjoy this video!

This old 2014 video no longer works for many people. The new video works with native windows and is MUCH easier. Enjoy!

Windows 10 allows you to use your surface as screen without the need of extra software. Both PC's need to have windows 10 though. Here's how:

On the device you want to use a second screen (the surface in this case):
1) Go to the Action Center/Notification bar.
2) Select the "Project" button
3) Click on "Connect to a wireless display"
4) click on "Projecting to this PC", this should take you to the settings window.
5) Change "Always Off" to "Available everywhere"
6) Change the "Require PIN for pairing" from "Off" to "On"
7) Take note of the name of your PC (if you don't know it), which is located next to "PC name" at the bottom of the screen.
8) Restart the device. DO NOT skip this step.

On the device you want to project from (this would be your main PC/ laptop):
9) Go to the Action Center/Notification bar.
10) Select the "Project" button
11) Click on "Connect to a wireless display"
12) Your 1st device, the one you want to use as a second screen (the surface in this case) should show up here if you did everything correctly. it would show under the name that was seen in step 7.
13) Select that device. And allow input if you'd like to use the touch option of your surface
14) you will be asked for a PIN. This PIN should automatically show up on your secondary screen/surface.
15) Type it in and hit proceed.

Your screen will be mirrored at first, press (Windows key + P ) to toggle to "Extend"
your done!

Works great - very happy to have found this. Slightly annoying lag that slows down both machines and the mouse doesn't appear on the Surface if you navigate from one to the other, but great for those times when a second screen is needed quickly!

QUESTION: why does it only mirror my laptop to the surface. I tried WINDOWS button + P and switched it to extended mode but nothing happens. Then i did the switch display on splashtop for the surface and nothing happens. Any Ideas/Tips? Thanks.

This still works in 2021! I was having problems having my pc detect my surface to use it as a drawing tablet, this app still works, you do have to download the streamer software. it is still all free. Just make an account and authorize your devices on your email! Thank you so much!

hehehe this video is for a MEDAL!!! Thank you million times for revealing this app and extended desktop/swich display functions. Works for me on my Win7 Pro (Intel/nVidia displays) and bottom low-end 25$ tablet INTENSO. I had a hard time with Air display to make it work and gave up on that and you have to pay for it, and then I discovered this completely free...Made me very very happy. It is lagging a bit, but that is not of importance to me since I need to use this combo when mobile for preview of videos when working with After effects. Superb man, superb!

This will only mirror.  I have a pro surface 4 and it will not "extend" the screens.  I do all the required steps and it has not worked. I have tried in both Tablet mode and regular mode.  Has anyone else had this problem?

I have splash top downloaded on both my laptop (windows 10) and my surface rt (streamer is only on laptop), however I am unable to extend the screen even when I do Windows + p and click extend. Is it not compatible or am I doing something wrong?

Nice tip, works straight from the install of the SplashTop Remote streamer on the main screen and SplashTop personal on the destination screen.  There are a couple of slightly annoying behaviours which I need to figure out how to fix but all in all it does what I need it to do.
