ECC Memory As Fast As Possible

Error-correcting memory is a popular choice when you simply can't tolerate any kind of error or data loss. How does it work?

Where do I download ECC ram? Is it better than regular RAM?

What is a blue screen of death? Is this some advance software not yet ported to linux?

says dream rig, but inserts a prebuild from the infamous ibuypower

I've had 3 PC's so far in my life, first one was prebuilt, others I built. The first I built I got ECC memory by mistake. That PC has been the most stable of them by a longshot. Could have been a coincidence but I've used all of them for extended sessions regularly and by memory looks like ECC helped me. I very very rarely had crashes of any type

ECC RAM is good stuff, just expensive, of course.

Air conditioning noise? Bad audio compression?

Trust me, ECC memory is "crucial" 😉 for working with applications that involve long and tough processes like video editing/rendering, 3d rendering, everything graphic related. I had non-ECC ram on an i5 and had crashes all the time using these applications. Now I have a Xeon with ECC-RAM (also on my graphics card) and my system is extremely stable and reliable. It's totally worth it.

good video/information. straight to the point with no drowning out music and flip flop video editing. thank you

I hope I can influence some ideas. Some might be a little "far-fetched" but I hope I can contribute and I don't mention something already covered. It'd be nice to see some new hosts (Berkel, Dennis, etc)
How about:
A video with Dennis explaining something he's good at
CES AFAP?
Newegg AFAP?
PCPartPicker AFAP?
BSOD
History of Linux AFAP
History of Microsoft?
Forums AFAP
U.2
mSATA
HTPCs
Consumer-Grade vs Enterprise-Grade
Active vs Passive Cooling
Web Browsers
Surveillance

If anyone else agrees or has any other ideas, please leave a thumbs up or reply with any ideas so they can see!

Ok if you are confused here you go.

Ecc memory hold a separate amount of data that is identical to the orignal one. As the memory does its job as “short term memory”, it compares the identical one to the orignal one. And if it some how gets switched around the ecc memory will quickly compare and fix it back to its original state. For example.

Original bits (before being processed)

001001001

Identical copy
001001001

Original bits (after being processed)
*1*01001001

Ecc memory compares with identical memory

001001001 = *1*01001001
Identical Orignal after

Quickly withing .5 sec, it switches it back

001001001 = 001001001
Identical. Orignal after and —————————-scanned.

Thats how it works.

if I am not mistaken, isn't ECC ram a bit slower than regular DDR3 ram? Like higher latency and slower clock speeds? Not enough to make it unusable, but enough to make it not desirable for gamers at least.

Dude. I was literally trying to find a video on this last week. Good work guys!

ECC memory doesn't just protect against data corruption from solar flares and cosmic rays; it also protects against exploits such as Row Hammer.

What happens when a bit flips and the parity bit flips at the same time? There would be an error but the system would report all is well. I wonder what the chance of that would be?

I really admire this channels attention to detail, i remember them 'arguing' about the Freshbooks ad wording and now Luke actually goes out of his way to not confuse anyone. Really minor but it shows what these channels are built on!

What if both the parity and the bit is flipped?

This takes me back to reading 16bit and correcting it. good old midi.

Background on the old Hebrews Luke mentioned, All Torah scroll are traditionally hand written. The are transcribed word for word and letter for letter. I makes sense that if your job is make an exact copy a scroll the length of a football field with over 300, 000 words you would find a way to check errors.

Good explanation of ECC RAM and kudos for pointing out the effects of the sun on electronics. :)
