This is a popular legend! In reality, Rosamund Clifford was secretly Henry’s mistress for several years but was openly acknowledged by him only when he imprisoned his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, as a punishment for encouraging her sons in the rebellion of 1173–74. Eleanor was imprisoned for close to 16 years. Rosamund died in or about 1176.

This painting is so suspensful the mistress is awaiting someone and she's being watched by the wife while the mistress has no clue that this is the beginning of her end

Guys the queen was in prison at the time of Rosamund's death... It was a rumour planted by ones who wanted to paint Eleanor of Aquitane in bad light...

Actually, Eleanor did come out on top in the end. Twice a queen, of two different nations, mother of kings and queens, owned lands in her own right and was loved by the people of those lands, and she ended up being the ancestress of many European monarchs today. She even lived past 70 and retired to a peaceful abbey after seeing two sons reign as king of England. So Eleanor is a rare W for medieval women.

"I've got your puppet by a string"... One woman established peace of mind, in exchange the other kept her dignity. All very ladylike, thank you Ms.Mae have a blessed day ✨

This painting is amazing. The details in it, the thread and a painting within a painting

She probably didn't even choose to be his mistress. He was a king. You can't just say no to the king. She was doomed to die the moment she was chosen by him. This is tragedy.

This legend makes an attractive picture, but is contradicted by historic fact. Henry imprisoned Queen Eleanor from 1174-1189 for supporting the rebellion of two of her sons against their father. Rosamund entered a nunnery in 1174 or 1176 and died there in 1176. At the time of Rosamund's death, Queen Eleanor was a prisoner in Winchester.😢

I love how art of the past told stories through the subtle symbolisms and signs

I feel like this always the case that the mistress have to pay the price. Like hold your husband accountable too miss ma'am 🤷🏻‍♀️

Waterhouse is my most favourite romantic painter . His details, colours, painting of the textiles, the beauty of the woman & men ( I could go on ) is just unreal . 🦄💜. 💕

I discovered that Eleanor of Aquitaine was my way back grandmother a few years ago. What an awesome story of her!

Eleanor of Aquitaine was a badass though. I’ve always loved her history and story since a child and I read a kids book about her. ☺️

Everyone knows the story of Henry VIII and his desperation to have a male heir. The story of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine shows what can happen when there are too many potential heirs instead. The heir apparent, whom Henry II appointed as Henry the Young King, who didn't actually have any power but was learning kingship at his father's elbow, died of an illness, setting up the power struggle between his 3 surviving brothers.

Bad part is back then the mistress probably didnt have much of a choice. If a powerful man decided he wanted you there wasnt any denying him depending on what kind of man he was. This actually still happens today in some places like if a member of a c4rtel wants a girl and she denies him he will often have her and or her family k1ll3d.

Eleanor of Aquitaine was the OG, she even conspired with her sons against Henry. (Not because of Rosamund) For a variety of complex reasons.
She was also the most powerful woman in Europe before she married first the French King, I'm pretty sure it was a Francis, might have been a Philipe. However I'm 99% positive it wasn't a Louis. However the French King annulled the marriage, and she once again became Duchess of Aquitaine, which was the whole of Southwest France. So the French Throne lost half it's terrirory because of a failed marriage. So she married Henry II and England became an Empire that stretched from the Spanish border to Scotland, which Henry also had conquered and held. As well as almost all of Ireland. It was all downhill from here, because of King John, the worst king since the Norman Conquest of 1066.

could you do a video on the painting Captive Andromache? it's one of my absolute favourites and the story behind it is heartbreaking.
