California may ban forced prison labor, servitude

California could ban involuntary servitude as lawmakers move toward potential ballot measurers that would remove all forms of slavery from their state constitution.

They get three hots and a cot. Keeping someone in prison for a year is more than I make in in the same amount of time. They did something to get themselves in the situation and now expect to get a free ride from everyone else that obeyed the law? And those that do work (not slaves as framed by channel 10) probably have more self worth than those that don’t. A man that is working has a higher sense of worth than those that sit with their hand out.

I'm surprised it's still allowed especially in California.

I got an idea 💡 quit committing crimes and stay out of prison

All prison labor is voluntary, and they do make some money (like 30cents an hour) but it's for when they get out of prison, so they have some money to get started. Such little effort went into this report. I expect nothing less from abc10

That's not slavery, that's pulling some of your own weight to help offset the cost of running the prison for which they're residing in. Cant do the time? Then dont do the crime. Going to prison isnt an opportunity, its a punishment. These people are so entitled.

About time. Also eliminate private prisons. Another great idea: Replace short jail sentences with caning. 6 months to a year in jail means you lose your job, probably your house, and child welfare could be compromised. That's massive economic damage.
Canning? Painful enough to discourage bad behavior without the economic downside

This is a ridiculous argument. It costs roughly $65k per year to house a prisoner in California. It’s called “earning your keep”, a concept most of the incarcerated failed to learn as children.
