Harriman State Park, the first blazed section of the AT. Blazed and cut in the summer of 1923, opened October 7, 1923. Most people walk through with out even knowing they are on hallowed ground. The shelters were built between 1928 and 1935 and are found elsewhere in the park too. The success of other park long trails (long distance for the time period) the Suffern-Bear Mountain, Ramapo- Dunderberg, and elsewhere the Vermont Long Trail led to the idea of a great Appalachian Trail to connect farms and historic sites by Benton McKaye, Major William Welch, Raymond Torrey, Arthur Perkins and Myron Avery.

Thanks for the update and Congratulations on completing another state. If you enjoyed the NY Lemon Squeezer you will like the CT Orange Crush coming up soon.

I just finished a section hike of the Connecticut section...lots of ups and downs, rock scrambles, one rattlesnake ( that I saw, anyway) lots of red salamanders, wonderful views. Nice shelters, though I would skip only one shelter (Limerock) only because it's a half-mile detour off the trail with a 200 ft. ravine you have to climb down hand and foot, no poles (too steep). If you can manage a to make Riga shelter, you will have the opportunity to have an awesome morning sunrise to start your day! Have a blast in New York! Cheers

Great day we've hiked that section, had the ice cream with the view too. Lemon Squeeze is no joke then bam the rock climb. Enjoy Harriman, you're doing amazing and enjoying the views and extras along the way. Inspiring.

Absolutely brilliant vlog. Scenes of the lemon squeezer were really cool. If you ever wanted a new career, I’m sure you could work for the NJ tourist board 😄

You're in my backyard :) Yeah, those are slow miles on the rock slabs over by the ladder. Did you see the sign before those stepping stones that said "AT Hikers please drive if high water?" That one always cracks me up :)

This is the section where I quit in 2016. It was mid August, 100 degrees at 10 am, and I was literally running to escape from swarms of bloodthirsty mosquitoes, even sprinted for my life up the stone steps by Fitzgerald falls LOL. Hopefully I can get here a bit earlier in the year next time, because the terrain by itself is not a joke. Such a gorgeous section and you captured it so well!

Harriman State Park is named after Averell Harriman. He was chairman of the Union Pacific Railroad, US Diplomat and developed the very first destination winter resort in the U.S. (Sun Valley, Idaho). I only know this because, I've hiked at that NY park and have a sister that lives in Idaho.

As a New Yorker it's so strange hearing people say they're really gonna' miss New Jersey! :) Loved the video and I've been loving watching your Appalachian trail journey. Good Luck!

My neighbor and I, sometime between 1974-1980, went through the Lemon Squeezer - I would imagine it's wider now with so many hikers passing through it (envision the Grand Canyon). I still have the map, which was printed in (gulp) 1957.

The stretch from the NY/NJ state line into Harriman SP is a really tough section that seems to take a lot of people by surprise. You are rewarded with some gorgeous views.
