Swing Caddie SC300 Review: A New Generation in Portable Launch Monitors

PURCHASE THE SC300 HERE:

One of the hottest new trends among golfers of all levels is the affordable launch monitor.

Most likely, you’ve already seen the traditional, industry standard launch monitor at work in golf tournaments. These launch monitors provide instant statistics on every shot. And shot statistics do more than add interest to a PGA Tournament. They also offer priceless insights for any golfer seeking to pinpoint shortcomings and practice more strategically.

Until recently, launch monitors only came with a price tag of $10,000 or more. They were the luxury of touring professionals, only available to amateur golfers in major golf facilities.

Over the past couple years, however, industry innovators have found ways to make the same cutting edge technology portable and affordable to almost anyone. And the innovator leading the industry is Swing Caddie.

You’ve likely heard of Swing Caddie. Their SC200 portable launch monitor was a huge hit from the moment of its release. Combining state-of-the-art Doppler Radar technology with affordability and a lightweight, compact design, the SC200 quickly became the go-to tool for coaches, professionals, and weekend warriors alike.

Now, Swing Caddie is introducing their newest model, the SC300 portable launch monitor. How does it stack up?

I’ll fill you in on the new features that set the SC300 apart. First, let’s talk about the foundation on which this new model is built.

The New Features of the SC300

As a PGA Teaching Professional, I can assure you, the more information you have about your golf swing, the easier it is to make real improvements to your game. I serve as Director of Golf at the Sanford Power Golf Academy, and I use launch monitors with my students all the time. I also encourage them to get their own portable launch monitors.

So it’s no wonder I’m a big fan of the new features of the SC300. For this new generation of launch monitor, Swing Caddie added three areas of feedback for greater insight into your game.

Apex

In addition to swing speed, smash factor, ball speed, and carry distance, the SC300 also tells you the apex of each shot.

What does this mean?

The apex is the highest point in your golf ball’s trajectory.

Why should you care?

There are several ways you can benefit from understanding the shape of your ball flight. Probably one of the most compelling examples relates to navigating hazards on the course. For example, imagine you have to shoot over a tree. Or, on the flip side, you may want to make sure your ball glides under a tree. Either way, when you know how high or low you tend to hit the ball, you have clearer expectations for your shot. This knowledge can inform your course management or guide you to make any necessary adjustments in your swing.

The question of apex arises a lot at the Sanford POWER Golf Academy, as well. We get a lot of wind in South Dakota, so it’s not at all uncommon for me to encourage my students to shoot a little lower. With a reliable launch monitor, they have a quantifiable understanding of what “lower” means.

Launch Angle

The SC300 also displays launch angle information after each shot.

“Launch angle”—as you probably deduced—refers to the angle at which your ball launches.

How is this a review? It’s nothing but a sales pitch. Not a single demo of the product. No shots hit. No comparison to other launch monitors.

I used this Launch monitor at the PGA show this year and I was very impressed with it, I used the SC200 model but found at 180 yards and longer the information was very inaccurate and useless. I think the Sc300 information is much more precise and accurate also. To answer your questions I did purchase it at the PGA Show and got a fantastic price on it there

I’m surprised at the inaccuracies some have had with their SC 200s. I have one and I find it an excellent product. Every so often it doesn’t register a shot, and occasionally, about 1 in 50, in cocks up and gives a dodgy reading. But for what it costs and what it does comparative to Trackman or GC Quad, I think it’s cool.
And

I wouldn’t bother upgrading unless they had ball flight data like like side spin etc, that could be wirelessly displayed on a mobile device. So you can see those awesome draws and fades we all hit so well! The App provides back spin data but not the unit itself. The SC 200 is $350 USD RRP, and the SC 300 is $550 USD RRP. Is the extra $200 USD cost worth 3 bits of data? Nah, for me I’ll stick to the more portable SC 200.
All the specs at the link and careful not to be misled by the graphic as it’s not ball flight direction.
This is still a great unit and I hope they bring out a model with ball flight data soon as I’ll buy one of those.

The main issue with the SC200 I tested was how inaccurate it become beyond 150-160meters, making it useless for true data for hybrids and woods. Can you give specific SC200 vs SC300 data on those distances? Regards,

Three questions. When is this being released -not on their website yet- and is it worth the upgrade from the sc200? And how recent and good is the pt30 voice caddie putter version

Just a few questions.
How much?
What was the third new option?
Have you added lob wedge to club choice?

SC200 main issue is that each iron will require a different distance from ball position. If I am hitting a 7 iron, the SC200 might be accurate 7 feet behind me but as my clubs getting shorter and shorter to wedges, I have to move my SC200 closer to my ball position than I have for my 7 iron. Does SC300 have the same issue like what I have mentioned?

I have a question that has not been asked as far as I know. Which golf ball in particular have the designers used in their calculations for distance and spin rate? For example, I have experimented extensively with Pro V 1's vs. Callaway Supersoft's and found the Pro V 1's to be higher spin, lower launch and shorter distance compared to the Supersofts which I've found to be 10-15yds longer yet less spin and higher trajectory. When I say extensively, I mean it. I'm a retired disabled veteran now living in the Philippines. I golf year round on the cheap and average 15 rounds a month.

I have an SC300. The phone app must have been written by an amature. I set my loft angle on the SC300 and the app resets it do default values. The iPad app needs a wifi connection. Why? I'm looking for a bluetooth connection to communicate with my iPad and/or smart phone. Why is wifi needed for that? I don't care to store my shot history online. They also want my location turned on. Why? The SC300 is a fine machine but the app is garbage (to be kind).
