Canadian here. Don't expect these feelings to go away when Trump leaves office or if all these tariffs are reversed. As a nation, we're heartbroken and betrayed as we've always done what's best by America. One of the core principles to the Canadian way of being is "love thy neighbor as thyself" and it's why we come off as so friendly and polite. We genuinely want to be friends with just about anyone who is decent and respectful.

As for geographic neighbors, we have never threatened the United States or done wrong by the United States. We've stood by you and supported you for over a century now, through two World Wars, the Korean War, the Cold War, and the War on Terror. We've aided you through every disaster and cheered you on through every triumph. More than any other nation, we've treated you like family. And this is how you repay us.

I'm sorry, but our relationship is irreparably damaged, because America has shown its true colors after we trusted you with our hearts. This really isn't just Trump's fault, but a reflection on how arrogant, disrespectful, and myopic America has become as a society. The fact that there is no pushback from a single crumb of America is all the evidence I need that we need to distance ourselves as a nation economically, politically, and culturally.

The Canadian public generally feels nothing but coldness about America anymore. Sure we're going to push for free trade and more economic integration with the EU, UK, Japan, South Korea, China, Mexico, Latin America, and the Middle East, but we're never going to play the role of sidekick to a superpower. The only people we can rely on are ourselves, our friends, and our families.

However, in this moment the entire country is proud and united in such a way that Americans could only dream. We are Canadian, and we will always be Canadian. And there is nothing we would exchange for that. No dollar amount. There is not a single thing anyone in America can do to take away our pride and independence. And compared to a country that sold itself out to deranged fascists, I think we're making a great deal right here.
