Dr. Zlotoff explains the transition residents go through, from being a trainee to becoming a physician.
My name is Barrett Zlotoff I’m an associate professor and the program director at the department of Dermatology at the University of Virginia. The resident goes from being a trainee to a doctor before your eyes at the beginning of their first year they meet the patient they're working with, but you're the doctor and you're telling them where to go with the treatment plan you know how to approach things. Then all of a sudden at the third year the residents are ignoring you. The family’s not looking at you, they’re looking at him or her. All of a sudden you realize you're not this patient's doctor and that's a really good feeling because you know what you've done is made this resident their doctor, and they are ready to go out into the world and be that doctor.
