Wonderful. Furtwängler right on target with the mood and expression. The 2nd movement is slower than many others take it, but Furtwängler somehow makes it seem correct and fitted to the greater whole.

A performance by Furtwängler and the Berliners where the sound communicates the lifeblood of the music flowing through it.

A fabulous performance. Only Bernstein with the Vienna Phil rivals this. Furtwangler’s tempos are perfect throughout and the slow movement is not too slow at all. In fact this the one slow movement of a Haydn symphony where slower is better - heartbreakingly beautiful. Forget about HIP practice comparisons - given hits account those are meaningless. Give me this recording any day over most of what has come out afterwards.

The value of a small repertoire has been forgotten.
