Reminds me of what someone said for creating a fake profile online. It's easier to copy someone else's identity than to invent one from scratch.

It’s like yelling mom or dad in a store and watching the heads turn. 😂😂

Most of us reading this will never be spies but knowledge is power and it’s definitely helpful to know and understand these things.. Thanks

Jason, I’ve been listening to you reading the audiobook. I’m only about halfway done, and it’s already been an incredible treasure chest of knowledge. I love the videos. Keep up the great work.

I've never worked as a spy. However, I have never "Called out" to any co-worker walking with people I don't recognize. You never know when someone might be working for the DEA on the side.

Great stuff to think about for regular people that want to live a peaceful uncomplicated life.

This stuff is gold for a hobby writer. I mean you rack your brain for fantasy world fieldcraft. I mean besides “Archer” these videos are great. But really, it’s the delivery that I watch for here. Such a great speaker.

I just stick with three simple words for my "parallel life" story: "Bond...James Bond." I've seen enough of the movies and people just smile and never bother me again.

One downside to living a cover is that actors sometimes suffer disassociation and other emotional issues due to being someone they're not. "Parallel the Truth" works better because it's stressful being somebody else. The less pretending required, the less stress. This stress is much like being lied to--except that the liar is yourself. Successfully being someone else requires you to gaslight yourself.

The video gives two examples of how unlearning deeply seated behavior is necessary to overlay new behaviors. Just the name is a self-identity. Denial of self, gaslighting yourself, disconnects you from reality at least a little. Actors suffer emotional distress especially when they don't LIKE their role, like the person that they become. Throw in recreational intoxicants (alcohol and other drugs), danger, discomfort, fatigue, and a hostile work environment (movie sets are hostile work environments) and it's a wonder that Hollywood has any semi-sane person living there.

My late brother Steve worked undercover for the Utah Highway Patrol and three decades ago his cover name was "Steve Simpson." He based his cover name on his Christian name to limit mistakes. Steve was a party guy--and a very successful interrogator because Steve could fake sincerity, fake sympathy. Later, Steve was a Treasury agent. He had been an Embassy Marine and he was in the Air Force Reserve Security Police when he died. Even being a Marine embassy guard required playing a role rather than being Steve. Most adult humans play multiple roles, multiple personalities--so there's practice being something you're not. Or is that "someone you're not?" Everybody has to wear masks and those masks must be appropriate for the time, place and crowd.

Sticking close to your real personality has its downsides but there's less chance of blowing your cover inadvertently and there's less stress in a stressful environment. Warning--dogs and humans have been partners for so long that a dog can smell human tension. Dogs have no filters and will react to that tension, that deception. Young children don't have that keen sense of smell but are observant enough to detect that something isn't quite right with your cover and also lack filters--fortunately, even parents ignore their little brats. Stay away from dogs and kids!

Learned this just going through the interview process for the Federal Air Marshals. Cover stories can be all kinds of things, and they may change from op to op, but you have to keep it relatable. Of course, some people will tell you they do something so you don't ask questions. As for writing the name or not responding to your real name, that's really no factor in that role (but I've been in the last situation and if you find yourself flinching at all, you have to make your reaction out to be sort of a "who's yelling that? Are they talking to someone over here? Does anyone know this guy?")

Reminds me of an episode of the first 48 where they question a guy n he said he never heard of or used the nickname they say he goes by. When he leaves, a cop says, Watch this n calls the nickname n the the guy turns around n responds to the name😂
