Addressing health challenges in Indigenous and regional communities

This virtual event focussed on Deakin University Rural Health initiatives, including a case study of co-created Indigenous nutrition research using cutting edge collaboration tools.
We also heard perspectives from a student in Deakin's newly created Master of Advanced Clinical Practice (Paramedicine Practitioner) who is working with Ambulance Community Officers to deliver frontline care.

About the presenters:
Professor Rachel Huxley is Executive Dean, Faculty of Health at Deakin University. Prior to this role, she was the Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) for the College of Science, Health and Engineering at La Trobe University, Australia where she was also the Co-Director of the Research Centre for Cardiovascular Biology and Disease.

Professor Steven Allender is Professor of Public Health and founding Director of the Global Obesity Centre (GLOBE) at Deakin University, a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention since 2003.

Dr Jennifer Browne has been working in Aboriginal health in Victoria for over fifteen years and is a postdoctoral research fellow within the Global Obesity Centre at Deakin University focusing on collaborative research with Indigenous communities and organisations.

Michelle Burley has been a Paramedic for 19 years and has lived and worked in East Gippsland since 2012. She is currently studying Deakin's Master of Advanced Clinical Practice (Paramedicine Practitioner).

Associate Professor Vincent Versace is Director of Deakin Rural Health (DRH). DRH works collaboratively to improve rural health outcomes by reducing workforce maldistribution of medical, nursing, and allied health professionals in rural Australia.

Troy Walker is a proud Yorta Yorta man and a research assistant at Deakin in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander food and nutrition policy. He is also a chiropractor and strength and conditioning coach with broad experience in the clinical health, wellbeing, nutrition and physical fitness domains.
