This level was actually so striking when I played this as a child, it felt like an emotional dramatic moment for Green Hill. Like a Kingdom Hearts version of Green Hill lol

The fact that Sunset Hill uses a remix of Green Hill makes me believe they are close by.

I think what separates this era of callbacks from the current fatigue towards them is that these iterations of GHZ 1) introduce an appealing twist (such as the sunset motif which brings with it this banger of a remix, plus unique level design elements) and 2) aren’t at the forefront of the game’s experience and as a result feel like a nice little treat rather than an attempt at pandering. This is only one zone, and besides this it’s pretty much all new. GHZ’s appearance in Adventure 2 is unlocked only after essentially 100%ing each level, and is a complete 3D recreation of the original. It made it a good chance to reflect on how far the series had come, especially considering that was the 10th anniversary game. Sonic Battle has a GHZ stage along with a super high energy remix to match its hectic gameplay. The references not only were shaped to fit the game they inhabited, they were also gone as quickly as they had come. It felt less like reliance on nostalgia and more like a brief show of respect/love. That’s not to say every callback since has been total nostalgia bait - I still think games like Generations, Mania, and the kart racers pulled them off pretty well - I’d just say they were generally better executed and more of a pleasant surprise in the early-mid 2000s.

Kenichi Tokoi made 4 remixes of the Green Hill theme (this (+ Act 2 and 3) and Sonic Battle one) on GBA and all of them sound amazing but completely distinct. Truly one of the most underrated Sonic composers.

This could be composed by Kenichi Tokoi. Considering this is a remix of Green Hill Zone, I can easily tell the genre of what Sunset Hill is from the composers, so it could be him that composed this.

The audio capabilities of the GBA and DS are underrated and underappreciated in my opinion. The creativity that sparked from the audio limitations is mesmerising

This theme is so nostalgic, and so important to me. You guys don't even understand. The Sonic I was introduced to as a kid wasn't the classic one. It wasn't the one from 06, nor was it the modern one from Colors, Generations, Lost World, Forces, Frontiers, etc. It was THIS Sonic. And not from Sonic Adventure or Sonic Heroes, from Sonic Advance. This is how I came to know Sonic, and how he played in 2D. And pair this with the anime Sonic X, and you have a plethora of good memories you'll surely remember. Yes I know that Adventure, Advance, and X Sonic are all based on the same version of modern Sonic, but Advance just feels so different from Adventure, and Advance reminds me more of Sonic X than Adventure does. Which is why this theme means so much to me. Both Advance and Sonic X are my childhood.

But also because this game was the sunset of this arc of stories for Sonic, the Emerl/Gemerl saga ended here
