Saw an ad for this on YouTube the other day. I loved how the guy doing the demo had a bandage on his finger. Definitely a knife guy.

I would totally watch videos of you testing factory edges

I’d love to see a 0, DBK just had a video yesterday with a .25 micron diamond spray strop spray and it made the knife stupid sharp.

All you have to do to use a different medium is test one knife, mark the edge with a sharpie as to make the cut on the same spot each time, with the factory medium say 3 times and write down the results, lets say you got 220, 230, and 225 (average of 225). Then when you put in the new medium (say 10lb Fishing line) make the same amount of cuts and write down the results again, lets say the 10lb line yielded 420, 435, and 430 (average of 428) There for a knife that yields a 225 with the factory medium is just as sharp as a knife that yields 428 with 10lb line.

someone should make a list of common mediums you could use, like fishing like or dental floss, and figure out the different weights they will come out to.

Awesome tech! The data will be a great addition to your knife reviews

I could see you (Jeff) and Cedric & Ada having some sort of sharpest edge showdown

Test the factory media with whatever you want to replace it with. That way you have a baseline to compare it to and still be able to use the chart it came with.

This is perfect... I was imagining something very similar recently. I have a few precision scales that I could build something similar with...would have to record it to know where it tops out at. Is the medium expensive?

I would have some series fun with this cool gadget!! Think I might have to try and rig my scale up for lil ghetto cutting tests

This is really cool! I sharpen my knives and many friends and co workers and this would be great to see how my free hand does against my KME.

If you switch the medium, say to sewing thread, just use the same knife on the factory medium (remember the numbers) then use the sewing thread (remember the numbers), the difference is then what you'll use from then on. Example, the sewing thread is %50 harder to cut than the factory medium, so you'll always add %50 when using the thread from then on.

Funny, I've never seen this before, but there was an ad for it when I clicked on your video. I have no use for one, but I am interested in my favorite knife reviewers having them. Haha. I can see Pete from Cedric and Ada making use of this.

According to some of the physics classes I've taken, the tension on that string could skew the results quite a bit depending on how much you tighten the string. This is otherwise a very cool way to test knives as long as you're consistent with the tension. Very interesting method.

Good video, I don't have a need for this but for some reason I want one just to have it...

Very nice setup bud. I have recently been learning to sharpen knives via the Lansky system and something like this would be great to have to see if I am doing good or not. I have been using the thin yellow pages or phone book paper and while it is a good way to get a rough idea of how sharp the knife is I think this tester would be much more specific for information regarding the sharpness. However, this is a very expensive tester. So, that is a factor in the worth of the tester and the refill media is over 30.00 so this is an expensive way to test the sharpness. Now could you do a slicing motion test with this setup or no? Because sometimes a nice toothy edge that's been stropped will cut better than a highly polished edge depending on the steel properties
