How to Choose a Motherboard: 3 Levels of Skill
Buying a motherboard can be a daunting task for new builders, so in this video I break it down on three skill levels: basic compatibility, features & extras, and components & build quality.
**UPDATE AS OF 5/19/2020 -- AMD just announced that they WILL be adding support for 4000-series CPUs to B450 and X470 motherboards. They will need to set up a 1-way BIOS upgrade that will drop support for some 1st-gen Ryzen CPUs, and details are still forthcoming, but it's great news!**

I love how Paul's explained all this probably a thousand times before in random videos but still explains it calmly so even the dumbest layman can understand. Respect the patience, my man.

Finally someone who explain things for completely newbie people like me, some YouTubers just say these weird names but don't explain what that is and I'm like "so wtf is this? It's important or an extra?" Thank you so much

I was just a teenager when I built my first computer, did it using your newegg guide and that systems is still running well even passed it down to a friend who uses it everyday. Been building PC's since
Now here I am, a grown ass bloke readying up to build a new machine looking for advise, thanks a bunch Paul

Hey Paul, I just wanna say thank you. One day I thought to myself that my MacBook Air wasn’t doing it for me in basic performance to even play Ravenfield so I went out to look for a gaming laptop. I looked around and found nothing I liked so I looked for a tutorial to see how difficult it was to build a PC. Yours was the first I found and you were the one who got me to now have my fist custom PC. You are a legend and I hope you can inspire many others to build like you did for me. Awesome video btw

Added as an algorithmic thank you for giving me a way to avoid ever having to explain motherboards to anyone else ever again! Cheers Paul :)

This is a great video. There are so many reviews of specific items of hardware, which are extremely useful, but there's definitely a gap of videos about the general principles you should apply when picking a part. I'm planning on doing my first build this summer (hoping stock availability and prices go back to pre-Covid levels some time soon) and this was very useful.

One thing I am struggling with right now is figuring out how to determine how much cooling/airflow is needed for your CPU/GPU combination, and how to tell apart the quality of different power supplies (as well as determine what wattage you actually need). A "3 levels of skill" style video on cooling and PSUs would be so useful to me and I'm sure many others.

I look at the whole set-up on a main board. I look at the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth version, number and speed of the lans, number of m.2 slots. I also look at the quality of the sound section, and whether or not that there is onboard video.

While I don't use liquid cooling, it is an option on the control headers that I look at in the event that air cooling is not enough.

RGB lighting control is a plus if I just want some distractions.

I usually use top of the line mb's. They tend to last longer and give better options with the extras I look for and use. I don't always use the latest and greatest mb's. Previous versions are usually the best buy for the money with the options that I like.

Good video tutorial. Thank you.

Building my first PC right now and this video was extremely helpful. I have my Case, and decided on my CPU, but have been struggling to figure out what motherboard I wanted. Thanks Paul! Got a happy new subscriber from me 😁

Thank you Paul for making these videos! It's been more than one and a half decade since I had a desktop, and wathcing your videos in the past few years, along with Linus's, Luke's, Jay's and Dmitri's is what gave me the knowledge and motivation to finally build one completely on my own. I just ordered the parts yesterday and can't wait to start.
Keep doing what you're doing!
Greetings from Hungary!
